Basic Information About Stimulants
Stimulants are drugs that speed up, or stimulate, the working of the nervous system.
Weak Stimulants
There are weak stimulants in coffee, tea, cola, cocoa, and other drinks. The stimulant in these drinks speed up the working of the nervous system just a little depending the amount that is use. For most people, the stimulants in these drinks are not dangerous. But there are some stimulants that can be very dangerous if they are abuse.
Amphetamines
Amphetamine is considered one of the dangerous drugs. Many amphetamines are pills. Because of the way they work, these drugs are sometimes called pep pills. Doctors may have people tale amphetamines for certain reasons. If a person is very sad, amphetamine may cause him to feel better. If a person is sleepy most of the time, those drugs may make him feel wide awake. Amphetamine may used in treating diseases, too. But they should be used only by people who are under a doctor’s care. Otherwise, people may come to depend on them.
When a person takes an amphetamine, certain things happen. His heart beat faster than it does most of the time. His breathing becomes more rapid. His blood pressure goes up. In general, his body works harder than it needs to. When the drug wears off, the person may feel weak. He may sweat a great deal. He may have a headache or an upset stomach. Parts of the body other than the brain may be damaged by amphetamine too. Two of those parts are the liver and the heart. They may be damaged by overwork.
Cocaine
Another stimulant that can be very dangerous if it is abused is cocaine. Because it is a white powder, it is sometimes called snow. It was once used to stop pain in certain part of the body during operations. Cocaine does many of the same things to a person that the amphetamine do. People to abuse cocaine may come to have psychological dependence on it. Taking too much cocaine at one time may cause death.
