An essential oil is a substance in liquid form that is distilled from the leaves, flowers, stems, bark, and roots of a plant. An essential oil can be viewed as the soul, the life force of the plant from which it is obtained.

Essential oils the life of plants

Essential oils are distilled from the leaves, flowers, stems, bark, and roots of plants. Essential oil is described as the soul, the life force of the plant from which it is obtained. It is the true extract of the plant’s life and strength, the “immune system” of the plant by which the plant lives and grows, protecting itself from damage by insect or bacteria.

Essential oil is the real essence of a plant

Essential oils are infinitely more potent than their herb counterparts, dried or non-dried. It is estimated that it would take over 500 cups of chamomile tea to register the same therapeutic benefits as a single drop of Chamomile oil. The distillation method is generally by steam. Essential oils, contrary to the use of the word “oil” may not really have oily-feeling. Most of the essential oils are clear like water, but some essential oils such as patchouli, orange and lemongrass are amber or yellow in color.

Essential oils have created a new interest in the commercial world by their various uses. Aromatherapy makes use of essential oils for healing and wellness. Actually essential oils have been used by all civilizations thousands of years ago. The Bible has recorded the use of aromatic oils for the burial of Jesus and others. The Egyptians used essential oils for cosmetics, and for embalming their mummies. The Chinese used them well for treatment of illnesses and for religious ceremonies.

Uses of essential oils

Essential oils used for curative and cosmetic purposes

1) Alternative therapies use essential oils

Almost all the alternative therapies use essential oils in their treatments. Aromatherapy uses it in various ways for massaging and external and internal applications.

2) Skin remedies

Essential oils can be mixed with non-scented moisturizers and can be applied on the skin as remedies for moisturizing, and for skin diseases such as skin blemishes, scarring, eczema and psoriasis.

3) Scents of essential oils cause no allergy

Natural essential oils do not have the side effects of synthetic oils which many people do not like. Actually many people are allergic to strong perfumes. Natural essential oils seldom ever cause an allergic reaction and are more subtle and seductive.

4) Relaxes and refreshes body and mind

Natural essential oils help to create harmony in body, mind and spirit and promote feelings of well-being, relaxation, and relief from stress.

5) Boosts libido of men and women

Some essential oils are used to enhance the libido in both men and women. They have been proved to have a directly stimulating effect on the body and some essential oils have also been shown to have hormone-like influences which can encourage sexual desire and performance.

6) Relief from insomnia

Essential oils such as lavender oil work very well for some people who suffer from insomnia. A few drops rubbed on the temples and below the nose or on the chest works great to get drowsy and sleep. You can put a few drops right on your pillow which can also do some good.

7) Anti-septic and anti-fungal

Essential oils, such as tea tree oil, have anti-septic and anti-fungal properties and serve as good remedies for skin problems such as acne and skin burns. They heal the infected areas.

Use of essential oils for cosmetic purposes

8) Essential oils are profusely use in cosmetics and sanitary fresheners. They are used in cosmetics, candles and soap making ingredients, etc. Americans use essential oils for perfume and toiletries industry to produce things such as perfumery and bath products.
