Are you an independent thinker? Do you rise to the challenge when it is necessary? One of the problems many of us face is having the courage of our convictions - we often know when something is right or wrong, but yet we are afraid to speak out. Now is time to demonstrate a little independence.

Afraid to Shine Out?

Are you one of those people who find that you go to a meeting and are afraid to offer your opinion?

That has never been me, I am almost the opposite never afraid to offer an opinion, even if it is worthless. At times a worthless, uninformed, opinion is potentially the worst combination. I think it also stems from the same source as those who stay quiet during meetings, it is about being afraid to shine out.

Expertise is a wonderful thing to possess but there is nothing worse than possessing expertise and not letting it shine through. There is nothing worse than a self-imposed gag order. You fear saying anything because you feel your expertise to be be insufficient, when compared against the greats in your specialist field. Yet the truth is you do not have to be an industry guru to have an independent viewpoint; you simply need to apply your own thinking to the problem.

A Little Independent Thought

You are sitting there listening to what others are saying and for one moment you think "Don't be stupid that will not work" only for a moment later the thought "Don't say anything, they will consider you a fool". Well which of these thoughts should you actually listen to? It is the first one actually, this is a time you should state your viewpoint loud and clear.

Trouble is that all too often we let that little voice of reason get in the way. Those views matter because no-one likes the "I told you so" comment from someone who has said nothing till the point of failure.

The point about having independent thought is that you must express it to action it. Tell people loud and clear what your opinion is and why you feel that way.

Courage of Your Convictions

Having the courage to speak up is perhaps one of the toughest things for any person to do, especially since we receive so little training about this important aspect of life.

It is like climbing a mountain you have to reach out to find the first handhold and foothold, then start by pulling yourself up and making new handholds. Progress is usually by small, informed movements - each can build our courage, each can make us more powerful, each will make us want more and that is important.

It takes effort and preparation to climb Mount Everest but it is possible by anyone who puts in the work. The same is true of our professional field. It takes effort and understanding to enhance yourself, but with the right approach you will be able to voice your opinion and be seen as someone to be listened to.

Do you have the Courage to Change?

There is no reason to fear your own potential. It is so important to take a courageous step and change your life. This series of thoughts for each day are provided as a way of exploring that potential. They both provide encouragement and offer a source for personal inspiration. Think of the series as a guide to action, to change. There is no reason to be paralysed by fear of the unknown.

You can make a contribution as well!

Part of self improvement also involves giving. I am confident that you too can make a powerful contribution. One way to express yourself is by joining Wikinut and become an active writer. Click here for more information.
