In the hustle and bustle of our hectic modern life, we can often find ourselves physically and emotionally out of balance and in need of grounding. There are many very effective grounding stones. In this article, I will address three powerful grounding stones and a few exercises to help you get your feet back on the ground.

Why Use Grounding Stones?

We all find ourselves in need of grounding from time to time. We've had a bad day at work, not enough sleep, final exams at school or trying to juggle work and family. Any of these things can leave us feeling stressed, anxious, spacey and out of balance. When we are not grounded we feel nervous, unable to focus or concentrate and overly sensitive to the energies around us. When we are grounded, we feel solidly connected to the present moment - peaceful, calm and relaxed. It is much easier to go with the flow when we are grounded.

Crystals and stones help to connect us to the energies of the earth. They are all filled with its vibration, but some stones are more effective than others at helping to ground us. Here I will address three of my favorite grounding stones and a few grounding exercises. Simply carrying one of these stones or wearing it as jewelry and doing one of these simple exercise techniques is often enough to bring your body and mind back into balance again. This is an excellent way to start your day and it will help you maintain a centered and peaceful state.

Smoky Quartz

Color: brown, gray or black

Hardness: 7

Forms: Hexagonal (trigonal) crystals which forms in prisms, grains, clusters and druses

Smoky Quartz is found around the world, but many of the best specimens are found in Australia, Brazil, Madagascar, Switzerland and the USA. The brown color of Smoky Quartz is the result of long exposure to natural irradiation. Smoky Quartz helps to balance and support the first (base) chakra. For more information on the chakras, please read 'Understanding the Chakra System'.

The many benefits of Smoky Quartz
Smoky Quartz is one of the most gentle grounding stones I've ever worked with. It is often called 'the stone of serenity' and has the effect of comforting and calming the mind. It enhances attentiveness to the moment, which makes it beneficial to use in meditation. Smoky Quartz is a protective stone which transmutes negative energy. It has also been known to be particularly effective for pain relief and to use for ailments of the pancreas, kidneys, abdomen, legs and hips. It is helpful in countering the effects of excessive elecromagnetic fields like you find around computers, microwave ovens or television sets. Smoky Quartz enhances and stimulates the base chakra function. It cleanses and clears the aura and energetic system. Sleeping with this stone under your pillow can help you remember and understand the significance of your dreams. It is an excellent stone to use when engaged in mentally challenging activities, such as studying for a final exam or doing your taxes. Smoky Quartz has been used to improve fertility and sexual virility. It is helpful in elevating mood, releasing negative emotions and alleviating depression. Smoky Quartz is a beneficial stone for healers to carry as it helps one to remain grounded, balanced and centered during a healing session.

Tiger Iron

Color: Rich gold, red and silver gray

Hardness: 7

Forms: Hexagonal (trigonal)

Tiger Iron is a stone containing contrasting bands of color made up of Tiger Eye, Red Jasper and Black Hematite, which makes it a very attractive stone for use in jewelry. It is found primarily in Western Australia with occasional specimens coming out of South Africa. Tiger Iron helps to balance and support the first (base), second (Emotional/Sexual) and third (Solar Plexus) chakras.

The many benefits of Tiger Iron
Tiger Iron is a potent combination of three very powerful grounding and protection stones and it is the most energetically dynamic of all the grounding stones. It has an emotionally calming and stabilizing effect and is very helpful to those who are feeling emotionally, mentally or physically exhausted. It is known to boost vitality and enhance the immune system. Tiger Iron can be very effective in healing chronic illnesses. It is one of the best stones for counteracting spaciness and confusion. Tiger Iron is a great stone for actors, artists, musicians and writers to carry, as it encourages creative self-expression. It works to bring energetic harmony to the blood, intestines, kidneys, liver, lungs and pancreas. If one is trying to give up a bad habit such as smoking or overeating, then Tiger Iron is the perfect stone to carry. Many Native American cultures considered Red Jasper to be the symbolic blood of the earth and believed that it helped us to connect deeply with her stabilizing energy and it was thought to induce health and rebirth. If you are looking to improve your memory and expand your mental dexterity, then Tiger Iron is the stone for you. When one is needing to work through particularly difficult obstacles, Tiger Iron can help to boost the personal power needed to over come it. This stone is a powerhouse of strength and vitality.

Black Obsidian

Color: Black

Hardness: 5 - 5.5

Forms: Non-crystalline from rhyolitic lava flows

Obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic glass. It is not a true mineral due to its lack of crystalline structure. It is only found in locations that have experienced rhyolitic volcanic eruptions, such as North America, South America, Japan, Greece and Iceland to name a few. Obsidian was valued by stone age people for its use in making arrowheads and early mirrors. As a metaphysical tool, it helps to balance and support the first (base) chakra.

The many benefits of Black Obsidian
Black Obsidian is a powerful grounding stone that stimulates the first (root) chakra and assists in dispersing negative energy from the physical, mental and emotional bodies. It assists in clearing the auric field of negative emotions such as anger, greed, jealousy and resentment. It is often called the 'psychic vacuum cleaner.' It can be very helpful to those wanting to release and clear old issues from the past. When used for this purpose, Black Obsidian has a way of cutting right to the heart of the matter. It helps to uncover patterns that inhibit one's personal and spiritual growth. So work consciously with this stone and be prepared to look at issues that you might have run away from before. The great gift of this stone is that it helps us to see ourselves as we truly are and opens us to receive the insight that we need to change. There is no better stone to get you moving when you find yourself stuck in a rut. This is a powerful protection stone which creates a shield to help block negative energies in one's environment. Black Obsidian will assist you on a journey of deep personal discovery and bring you back, refreshed and renewed.

Grounding exercises

Day to day stress can leave us feeling disconnected mentally, physically and spiritually. We might have difficulty concentrating or feel stressed out and worried about even the most minor details of our lives. We may also find ourselves bumping into things and tripping over our own feet. These are all signs that we might be in need of grounding. The purpose of doing grounding exercises is to bring our focus back into the present moment and increase body awareness. Carrying a grounding stone while doing any of these exercises will increase the benefit.

Visual grounding exercise
This is a simple grounding exercise designed to help bring your mental focus back to the present moment. This one you can do anywhere:
Stop whatever you are doing. Take slow deep breaths. Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth. Mentally take note of everything that is around you (a bird flying in the distance, a smudge on the window, leaves moving on the trees, a cob web in the corner, etc.) Notice every detail. Pay attention to the variety and depth of colors. Notice the light and shadows. Do this until your conscious mind is fully in the present moment.

Morning routine
This is the perfect exercise to do first thing in the morning before getting out of bed:
Take a moment to notice how your body feels. Stretch if you need to. While laying on your back, bring your attention to your feet. Take a slow deep breath in through your nose and tighten all the muscles in your feet. Release your breath out through your mouth as you let go of the tension in your feet. This can be done once or twice with each part of your body. Now move up to your calves. Take a deep breath in, tighten your calves and release as you breathe out. Repeat this process with each of your muscle groups moving up your body, all the way to your head. When you have finished, take a moment to appreciate your body and give thanks for how well it serves you. This exercise can be done any time of day.

Great information, added to Facebook and Google +

I am very much into stones myself and have several. Tiger Iron is not something we see a lot of here in Canada at the shops.

Thanks for the comment, Mark. If you ever have gem shows come to your area you should be able to find Tiger Iron there. It is quite inexpensive, too. By the way, I've not been able to get Google + to work on Wikinut for a couple of weeks and I can't figure out why..

Hi Andre, Thank you so much for stopping by and sharing this with your daughter. I've been a rock hound for about 25 years as well. Would love to see her collection. I was cracking up about the thought of Steve and the boys doing yoga at the beach.....Well, maybe if you had weights and frisbees for them to play with, too. Yoga would be too slow for them. I got those photos from photobucket.com :o) Thanks for your continued support, Andre.

Hi Shishir....Check out my other articles which are all about crystals and how to use them. My guess is that you live in India. Is that correct? I'm sure India has rock shops like we have here in the US. Just start looking....you'll find the right one. Thanks for commenting. I appreciate it!

Carol, very informative and worth reading. I strongly believe that one's physical and mental health should be properly balanced and only that stage will give productive energy to us.

The you tube video you've shared is very beneficial. Lord Buddha who was born in Nepal has given the blessing to this world regarding the meditation. Different postures of meditation are being practiced from his teachings.

It's really wonderful. Please continue writing and I'll read all your articles. I'd also be very happy if you'd read my poetry and provide feedback to me.

The beauty of Crystals is the fact that is wards off the negativity around. To cleanse the negativity it is has drawn out from all around, wash the crystal in salt water. It cleans the impurity.

There are many stones that are very helpful at warding off negativity, but one must be careful, there are also many stones that magnify the energy around them. Salt water is definitely the best way to clear your crystals. Thank you for your comment, Aiyanna.
