Are you too afraid to do something? Fear is a powerful thing, yet it too often holds us back from our own true potential. Sometimes you just have to go out and put your best foot forward and have the confidence that you have the answer.

Fear!

Sometimes you have to have the confidence that your viewpoint is correct no matter how big or small the situation.

In any situation you enter into there is rarely one, and only one, correct way to do something. Typically we can look at multiple choices; multiple decision points; multiple alternatives. Any one of these may be the correct approach and remember that there is hardly ever "only one way to do it". It may be because of this we lack confidence in the choice that we make or are afraid of failure.

The thing about failure is that if you do not try you will never know whether the idea you had will word or not. Any idea may succeed or it may fail. Thomas Edison is reputed to have tried to produce electric light 9,999 times before his single success. He could be seen as having failed all those times, but he preferred to put it as finding a large number of ways not to do something. Without the confidence in an idea you do not even get that far, so what if you fail - you may actually learn more from that one failure than if the idea succeeds.

Don't lack confidence.

Alternatives

As we build knowledge we also build confidence in our abilities. Not every idea is as ground breaking as the creation of electric power, but they may hold the answer to a problem that we face today.

Generally as we grow with our knowledge we also grow with our confidence and our ability to express an idea. Yet this is not universally true for every person.

On any given day anything can happen, and this is in part what makes life exciting. Take for example the policeman who has given evidence at dozens of trials, who walks with extreme confidence down the courtroom corridors yet on a specific day is tripped up by a young lawyer with confidence that his theory of the case is correct. Awkward, but tomorrow is another day and he will start again with another case. It is not a fatal slip it is just a part of the journey of life, from which he will learn.

From the viewpoint of this young lawyer he had the courage to believe in his client and had an alternative theory of the case and worked it through to success.

In any given situation there are possibly dozens of alternatives available. It is simply finding an approach that works for all involved. Have the confidence to make a suggestion, you never know it may lead to the solution that you are seeking.

Do Something!

At a certain point it is clear that doing something is better that doing nothing, this is what drives the need to seek a solution to our problems.

Offer your idea and be confident about it. After all ideas come to us because of the experiences that we have had. Overall we should not dismiss those experiences as they have built us into the person that we are today. Many other things add to our experience and assist us in identifying possible solutions.

One thing that is clear - fear paralyses us.

Paralysed by Fear?

You don't have to be. There is simply no reason to fear your own potential. One thing is clear humankind has so much potential. This series of thoughts for each day are provided as a way of exploring that potential. They both provide encouragement and offer a source for personal inspiration. Think of the series as a guide to action, to change. There is no reason to be paralysed by fear of the unknown.

You can make a contribution as well!

Fear of rejection is very real and stops many from achieving their potential.

Adam Carr is correct is saying that overcoming fear is in itself fearful but it makes you feel on top of the world.

Buzz is correct is saying you should not fear if you are correct, but for many this does not stop the fear. It is certainly a challenging thought.

most interesting Peter...I think sometimes the fear is worse than the things we are fearing...(or something like that!!!)

You are right - there is nothing worse than fear itself.
