About Cucumbers

Cucumber is a vegetable that is cheap and easily available everywhere at almost any time of the year. It is easy to grow and is an excellent as a body refresher during high temperatures and heat of summers. But do not for a moment think that cucumber and cucumber juice are only meant to be taken to get relief from the sultry summer temperatures or that they serve only this purpose.

In fact, this very cheap and thereby under rated vegetable has much more to offer by way of a variety of nutrients apart from its water content which is over 95% of its weight.

Cucumber can be juiced along with its skin and seeds. Actually juicing it with the skin on requires that it be washed thoroughly to remove its pesticides residues. Better still, buy organically grown cucumber to be on the safer side.

Adding cucumber juice to other vegetable juices mellows the taste of the offending vegetable like kale. Another benefit of juicing the skin is the benefit of getting Vitamin A, since the peel has a lot of it.

Most of the cucumbers that are sold are waxed. Wax can be removed by either washing them with a vinegar based wash or with water in which a spoonful of baking soda has been dissolved.

Cucumbers age faster when stored with apples, melons, tomatoes. Hence do not store cucumbers with these fruits and vegetables.

A very nice and concise article on Cucumber. I eat cucumber a lot when available and I did not know of all the health benefits until now. Thanks for making this article and the pictures available.

We have so many cheaper alternatives readily available than splurging on expensive branded products. The much overlooked cucumber is one of them. Thanks for this useful share, Rajan - siva
