A quick, easy and healthy way to pop popcorn kernels in a microwave oven in a small brown paper bag without using any oil.
Homemade Microwave Popcorn
Popcorn is a great choice for a snack food. Researchers say, " if you substitute one cup of popcorn (air-popped) for one once of chips it reduces the amount of saturated fat you eat by 1.3 grams and cholesterol by 25 milligrams.
Two healthy ways to pop popcorn kernels are; in a air- popper or microwave oven. Because when you use a air- popper or microwave oven you will leave less fat on the popcorn than you would with popcorn that requires the use of butter or oil.
If you do not like eating popcorn plain you can use butter substitutes like; " I Can't Believe It's Butter Spray", Weight Watcher's Butter Spray", " Smart Balance Buttery Burst spray" or " Butterlicious Buttery Spray."
My recipe: Homemade Microwave Popcorn
One bag will pop 7 to 8 cups of popcorn kernels. Which consists of 2 complete servings. One serving size of popcorn is 3 cups per person.
1/4 cup of yellow or white popcorn kernels
1 small brown paper bag ( lunch bag size)
A microwave oven
First open the paper bag; pour 1/4 cup of popcorn kernels into the bag, lay the bag down on a counter top, fold down the top edge of the bag 1/2 inch, then fold it down 5 more times. Shake the popcorn kernels in the bag around until they feel level on the flat side surface of the bag.
Next place the popcorn in the bag into the microwave oven. Then set the timer on high for 4-41/2 minutes. You must keep in mind that every microwave oven is different so the setting times may vary.
To prevent the popcorn from becoming scorched or burnt, never leave the microwave oven unattended while the popcorn is popping.
When the popping slows to 2 to 3 seconds between pops, turn off the microwave oven and remove the popcorn. Then season it to taste.
