Is Your Mind Controlling You?

We must use our minds to learn about ourselves. we must overcome the need to be perfect or to be someone specific, and in achieving this, we find peace of mind. This means also that one is never wrong but that one is constantly learning and with such an attitude, one can find peace.

Do We Have stillness?

Our thought patterns sculpt grooves when the same ones are constantly repeated. The more frequently this occurs, the more likely it is that your thoughts will slip right into these "comfort grooves" at the very first sign of such thought patterns. This is the nature of the human mind

Philosophers agree that the mind is not a hindrance at all. J Krishnamurthi embraces the mind as a valid part of experience. He defined the term: "Discipline Of Mind", to learn from the mind rather than to try to control it...

You have to have complete stillness of mind in order to be able to
change it, and until you realize that your mind isn't helping you, you will never be able to change it.

By "walking" through every facet of your mind's inner dialogue for at least one whole day, you will begin to see a clear thought pattern starting to emerge. Let me clarify this by explaining just what I mean by this, in simple terms:

From one moment to the next, our minds are bombarded by 1000's of thoughts, some are calculated to assist with various vital tasks, but the majority are quite random, often completely unnecessary thoughts. Many of which, are negative and devoid of any constructive use or value whatsoever...

Once you start to know the nature of your own mind, you will start to enjoy a degree of freedom from it.
What's left to do, is to fine tune this change of mind.

It forces us to use those grooves, that by repetition, have become extremely deep, so much so, that it allows no opportunity to change. The result is, that the more we then want to change, the harder it becomes.

See your mind as an old record turntable. If you put on a rock and roll record, rock and roll is what you are going to hear, It would be really silly to even expect to hear classical music.
We complain all the time, that things aren't changing, but we refuse to allow our minds to be changed. To be able to hear classical music, you have to change the record.

Breathe Your Mind Into Stillness (Pranayama)

The only way possible, to do this, is to fill in the old deep grooves.
The tool designed to fill these old carved out patterns, is meditation. Using Pranayama (breathing) and Yoga postures, will prepare you for meditation. By using the tangibility of the body, yoga together with Pranayama, your mind becomes trained toward stillness, which is the easiest route to the mind.

The sensation of experience, captivates the mind and starts the process of becoming one-pointed. It is a beginning stage to being one-pointed without a sensory experience triggered externally.

Yoga postures further aid in heightening the oxygenation of the brain which in turn induces a state of calm without the effort of first trying to still the mind. The muscles against the skeleton are tightened by yoga postures which results in calming the central nervous system which in turn, influences brain activity.

The parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for the rest and repair of the mind-body system, is activated by the stillness between postures. The sympathetic nervous system which is actually the adrenalin reaction of fight/flight happens to be the one which most of us tap into every day, to keep up with the pace of what we believe, that we have to get done, as well as the constant thinking process.

We train the eyes for stillness, by using yoga postures with dedicated eye placement. This is needed when the eyes are closed for meditation. Since your eyes are a good clue to your state of mind.

Set yourself up, with a list of things you are forcing yourself to do, and your mind rebels - this is a good example of why new years resolutions fail. Classic yoga philosophy has an approach called "eight-limb". This is aimed at overcoming these aspects of the mind. It also acknowledges that continuous practice over a long period, is the way to succeed.

Some Factors That Can Cause Distraction Of Our Minds:

While training our minds towards stillness, we can be distracted by several external as well as internal factors such as bad digestion, hormonal imbalance and low energy levels, to name just a few.

The mind itself must never be blamed for restlessness or evil/negative thoughts. Suppressing our minds, is a recipe for disaster. The mind is not a thought process nor is it a physical object. The mind is pure energy.

Greed, passion, anger and ambition are waves of this energy. There is freedom in the realization of this fact. And not by attaching subtitles, to an experience in an effort to label, place a story or to direct blame.

The yoga process is a means of harnessing this vital energy. The different yoga styles all have this same energy at their core. In the end, they all achieve stillness of the mind

There is too much happening in a second and with each day the count of events increase. So its tough to maintain calmness, but I guess yoga helps!

Hello Songbird, There is a comment I get as a fixture inspite of my efforts to fix it, I just keep getting it, it's this:'Do you know about our formatting options"?
It's definitely not links on the page or even links to social networks twitter, F.B. etc. whatever it is, I used to read it but didn't get it. It has some other meaning, that i just don't get.Any how, thank you for your sincerity as always.Andre'X

I just love breathing exercises. That is how I always start my meditation. I also do one breathing exercise all throughout the day. Good info, nice read. By the way, love the new profile picture. Thank you for sharing.:)

Tranquil, I pretty much know my formula, it is different for every category. Maybe I could help some. I am no whiz at this and I don't have my Jerry any more to guide me, sadly. But if you want any pointers, just let me know. my email add is homeskillet19@aol.com. Just put who you are in the heading. The writing is great but, I think it just needs to be tweaked. Any ways, I hope I am not over stepping my bounds. Nice read, thank you for sharing.:)

What a great article, Andre! Very clear and concise information about how yoga and meditation techniques effect us. I dropped out of meditating for quite a few years and just started again a couple of months ago. What a difference it makes.

Hello Carol, I had only recently started meditation and although I am just a beginner, I feel worlds better for it. I don't think that I want to ever become a yogi though. I just need its calming benefits for my restless spirit.I am often so overwhelmed by all the great things I want to still do in life since for the past 34 years, the spiritual work, which I absolutely loved doing, had kept me so busy 24/7, until 6 years ago, when I lost my eye site and a year later, my right leg as well. All of which, was necessary in a bizarre kind of way in my case, since I had been relentless, always dashing around, helping one family here, another one there, a sick child there, fighting poverty, always dashing around, spreading the message of hope and love around, so much so, that I had to be brought to an abrupt stop.(No regrets though). Two eye implants later, I have excellent vision in both eyes again. The leg keeps me home most of the time now, a luxury that I seldom allowed myself before.Gosh, I really don't know what came over me just then, unloading all of that just there. My apologies, Regards,Andre'

Yes my friend, I mean Jerry Walch. He was my mentor from the get go. I sure do miss him.:(
Andre, you are a darn good writer and I didn't know what you would think of me, butting in. Just like with the moderator, it is nice to have others look at your work and then be honest and tell you what might need to be done differently. With my first Bugg stories, I asked jerry to go look at them, he did and what he sent back in the email was just priceless and honest. Jerry wrote 'Denise, you would fail any creative writing course but, it works, so keep it up'. Now, is that just great or what! Jerry and Mark (Mark Gordon Brown has also been a great help to me) are honest with me and always have been. I do not get mad at critism, as long as it is constructive. Like I wrote earlier, if you ever need my help please email me. I will just point out one thing, where you have the section with the 'rat race' picture. Why not get your camera and take a picture of someone in a yoga position. The section is about yoga so it would be fitting. Also, since you are placing a picture on a yoga position, you then can add 'yoga position' on your tags. I know when I have looked up yoga before, I have typed in 'yoga positions'. It is just a way to meld your section with the right picture and also, allow you to add more tags, that might get you more hits. Any ways, as I have said before, you are a great writer, far better than I am, that's for sure. I just think there are a few things that need to be changed in the formatting. Star pages are always on display, that is why I always try to strive for them. I am here if you need me my friend and thank you for taking my comment like you did. I just wanted to help.:)
