Mother Nature Sings you to sleep
Modern man is becoming more and more sleepless. He is actually craving for a ‘goodnight’s sleep. Sale of tranquilizers and sleeping aids is increasing by leaps and bounds. Most of the over-the -counter medicines for insomnia are simply sedatives and have many side effects. A quality sleep makes you fresh and energetic both in body and mind.
Increase of insomnia in modern life
The number of people losing their sleep and spending nights tossing in their beds is increasing. There are various reasons for insomnia. Tension, anxiety, more worries about security, lack of exercise, fast activities in life, more light and noise, modern lifestyle situations such as spending more time watching the monitor of television or computer, and diseases are some of the reasons for the increase of insomnia.
Natural remedies are better to cure insomnia
Tranquilizers and sleeping aids available from the pharmacies or stores are dangerous because they cause many side effects. Hence it is better to treat insomnia with natural remedies. There are a lot of natural remedies which have been practiced since ancient days. Most of the alternative medicines are natural remedies without side effects. Herbal remedies are good to treat insomnia because they generally relax and calm the person so that his body and mind can reach a state that is conducive to sleep.
Natural remedies for insomnia
1) Prepare your sleep
Preparation to sleep is the first step to overcome insomnia. Both body and mind should be prepared. Stop watching TV or computer at least one or two hours before going to bed to prepare your eyes and brain. Begin preparing for sleep at least 30-45 minutes before going to bed by taking some calming herbs, reading, hearing a pleasant music, taking a bath in warm water or doing some deep breathing exercises.
2) Relax your body and mind with some exercises
Relaxation techniques are the most effective ways to increase sleep time, fall asleep faster, and feel more refreshed in the morning. Relaxation techniques eliminate toxins from the body and prepare the body and mind for sleep.

3) Ayurvedic treatment for insomnia
Ayurveda, an ancient medicinal system of India, treats insomnia with massaging as well as intake of infusions. It treats diseases by balancing the three humors of the body, namely vata, pitta and kapha. People with imbalance of these three humors generally have irritability, anxiety, and fear with insomnia and they are treated with the application of oil on the head and feet. Warm coconut oil is used on head and feet for massaging pitta type people . Warm sesame oil is applied for vata type people and warm mustard oil is applied for the kapha type people. They also prescribe proper diet, physical exercises, meditation and yoga to balance the humors and cure insomnia.
4) A drink before going to bed
Both Ayurveda and Siddha medicinal systems of India suggest drinking a glass of warm milk (preferably that of buffalo) mixed with a little honey before going to bed. They treat insomnia with essential oils of sweet basil (Ocimum Basilicum) and henna (Lawsonia Inermis). The use of basil leaf and henna flowers is recommended to cool the body system, and to cure nervous system fatigue and insomnia. Western medicines also suggest drinking one cup of passionflower or chamomile tea before bedtime.

There are many herbs that induce sleep and cure insomnia. Herbs such as valerian, lavender, sweet basil, henna, hops, and catnip provide a soothing effect on the nerves to cure insomnia. They can be used to prepare tea that can be taken one or two hours before bed time.
6) Take some calming herbs
Taking some harmless herbs, in the form of pills or tinctures, will induce sleep. Lavender ,catnip, and chamomile are gentle sedatives that have aromatic and cooling effect. They contain various minerals that can improve the function of the nervous system, relieve fatigue and induce good sleep.
7) Eat sleep-inducing diet
Magnesium-rich foods such as legumes, dark leafy green vegetables, wheat bran, almonds, cashews, and blackstrap molasses or carbohydrate snacks such as whole grain crackers before bedtime may help to promote sleep. It is better to avoid eating sweets before bedtime.
8) Aromatherapy is a natural remedy for insomnia
Aromatherapy has been a natural remedy for insomnia throughout human life. Foe example, the scent of English lavender has long been used as an ancient remedy to help people fall asleep. Aromatherapy uses essential oils in massaging and in tinctures. They can be used as scents to refresh bedroom and induce sleep. Lavender, chamomile and ylang ylang are used as essential oils to cure insomnia.
9) Green your bedroom for a comfortable sleep
‘Go green’ is the trend of modern life. It should be adopted in the bed room also. Bedroom is the place where you spend most of your rest time. It should be comfortable and relaxing free from any disturbance. Good ventilation and right temperature in the bedroom with dim lights can induce your sleep. A comfy mattress has much to do in curing your insomnia.

Very good information and suggestions. Soft music or a 'sleep machine' might also help, (but they become addictive)...
