We all know what tiredness is. And all of us have experienced it many a time. It comes and then goes after sometime. But if it persists and becomes a real problem, what does it indicate? Read on to know more.

Tiredness and Me

Persistent tiredness is something that has been worrying me since a long time before. I have noticed a seasonal effect about this. Ours is a tropical climate. In Kerala, we have only two clearly marked seasons. They are summer, covering nearly half of the year and rainy season, which will be there for the remaining half. There is a very mild winter which also forms a part of the summer. During this time there will be slight cold (temperature may go down to some 20-18 degrees Celsius in the early morning, that is all) in the morning and scorching heat after that. I don’t know whether this can be called winter.

During the summer, the scorching sun raises the day temperature to some 35 degree Celsius or more. I experience persistent tiredness during summer, for which the reason may be the extreme heat, I presume. While traveling in a bus during summer, I doze off most of the time. While at home also I feel tired and easily slip into a nap sitting in a chair or lying down somewhere.

I often wondered as to what the reason for my persistent tiredness could be. But till the beginning of this week I was remaining clueless about this. After a medical examination it came as a shocking news for me-I am having a serious disease. Can it be the reason for my constant tiredness and fatigue? I don’t know. It is said that tiredness can be a symptom of some disease.

When Does Tiredness Become a Problem?

If you get up every day with fatigue and lack of energy, tiredness might have become a problem to you. Other complaints associated with tiredness are feeling always sleepy, lack of energy and enthusiasm, inability to make decisions, poor concentration, depression etc.

Causes of Persistent Tiredness

There is an expert opinion that ten percent of us suffer from persistent tiredness at any one time. There are a number of patients seeking medical help to overcome the problem of persistent tiredness. It is interesting to know that the majority of those complaining of persistent tiredness are women.

We all experience tiredness occasionally. It may be due to the lifestyle in this modern world, which always is stressful. This type of tiredness goes away once we take rest sufficiently and get enough sleep.

There can be physical and mental causes for tiredness.

Physical Causes for Persistent Tiredness

Too high or too low body weight can cause tiredness. If your body weight is very high, your body will have to work harder to do anything as compared to those having normal body weight. But if you are an underweight, your muscles won’t be sufficiently strong and will get tired very easily.

Diseases also can be a reason for persistent tiredness. Anemia, heart disease, thyroid problems, cancer etc. may cause persistent tiredness.

Remaining lazy and inactive can cause tiredness. Making yourself active only can remove this type of tiredness. Heavy work load also causes tiredness. Lack of sleep and excessive consumption of alcoholic drinks can also create tiredness.

Mental Causes for Persistent Tiredness

Mental stress can cause tiredness. Modern life is very stressful. It is a speedy race to get to one’s goals. Some enjoy this hectic life. But for some it generates high amounts of mental stress. It induces persistent tiredness in them. Another cause can be the mental ailment known as depression. Depression can be disastrous. It induces tiredness and fatigue. When depression grips you, you may find yourself always tired and listless.

How Can One Come Out of Persistent Tiredness

The following are some methods that you can try to get rid of tiredness. If all your efforts to overcome tiredness fail, you should definitely consult a doctor.

Make Yourself More Active

Remaining lazy and inactive will induce tiredness. This tiredness in turn makes you more inactive and this goes on like a vicious circle. You should break this pattern by making yourself busy. Get involved in physical activities. Exercising regularly may help. Try to lead an active life and try to be pleasant always.

Sleep Sufficiently

Insufficient sleep can cause tiredness. If you are not getting enough sleep you should adopt a regular sleep routine. That is, you should go to bed and get up at fixed times every day. Such a routine will be helpful in getting sufficient sleep. But, remember that sleeping too much will produce a negative effect. Eat only moderate quantity of food at night to get good sleep.

Importance of Balanced Diet

Your diet should be balanced in order to make it nourishing. Green, leafy vegetables should be included in large quantities in your food every day. They contain vitamins, minerals, anti oxidants etc. They provide sufficient fiber in your food which will improve the working of your digestive system and bowel function. Include all types of vegetables in your food.

Including fish in your regular diet is good. Small fish will be better than very large varieties. It is better to minimize the intake of red meat like beef, pork etc.

Fruits should be included in your daily diet. You should drink plenty of water.

Keep Yourself Happy and Cheerful

There should be always positive thinking. Make yourself cheerful always. Go on an outing regularly with your family and make merry. It will help remove your tiredness.

Go for Medical Help

If all your attempts at removing your tiredness fail, it is time to consider seeking medical help. Consult a doctor. He will find out whether some disease in you is actually causing the tiredness to persist. I am saying this from my personal experience. I have been haunted by tiredness for a long time. Only recently could I find out that the cause was a serious disease that was hidden inside. My doctor detected it and I am undergoing treatment for it now. However I don’t want to disclose what disease it is that troubles me.

I usually love to push myself to the limit when it comes to working and eat the minimal too. I found that drinking fluids with sugar and a pinch of salt does help in rehydration that takes away tiredness.
Depression also causes tiredness and alongside thinking too much. So the best way to go about life is to through out the worries of today, have laugh and get on with life wherein you never feel alone and need to cry yourself to sleep and end up waking up exhausted as you have been crying all night.

You article is a complete thesis on tiredness, thanks for a wonderful post as usual, Pradeep. Climate is a factor like you get in Kerala where the humidity is high almost throughout the year. I get over my tiredness by involving myself in activities that are interesting. Regarding my work, it is tough to make it so and I spend most of my waking hours at it or worrying over what could go wrong when I am not in control! That is enemy number one to have a fulfilling life. As I have gotten older, in fact I should be retired now, I take each day as it comes and that itself is a boon! Keep expectations low (forget what the motivators say) and then exceed the limits. Then we hit the bed with satisfaction and also get up in the morning without much hassle. Why burden ourselves as our needs are bare? On top of everything else, I feel that our mind has to be controlled and kept away from those that give us a headache, heartache, depression and also tiredness! siva

That is true Jacuba. Watching TV too much makes one lazy. And if it lasts late into the night, it robs one of sleep and makes one drowsy the following day.

A well written piece on why we are tired. I have just awaken after having to deal with too much stress. Funny thing is, a few days after one of the biggest stress in my life (at this time) has now ended, I am full of energy. Stress is so hard on us. Nice read. Congrats on the star page.
