Constipation is the inability to have regular bowel movements, not being able to clear the bowels completely or having to strain during evacuation.
Though it is normal to have bowel movement once a day, medicine defines constipation as less than 3 bowel movements a week.
Some of the reasons for getting constipated are :

A diet lacking in enough fiber and consumption of junk food is a very big cause of getting constipated. With change in our eating habits constipation has become more common.
The importance of consuming 8 - 10 glasses of water daily in normal weather cannot be over stressed. In hot weather at least double the water should be drunk .This is more important for people who have a tendency to get constipated. some medications also require than more water be consumed.
Consistent use of laxatives make the colon used to them. with regular use the natural contraction ability of the colon is affected and the person relies more on laxatives for relief. It is a vicious cycle of taking laxatives, relief, taking laxatives till one fine day you cannot do without them and with passage of time larger doses are needed.
Medications for relieving pain, acidity, spasms etc cause more water to be absorbed from the intestine as they slow down the bowel movements.
Lack of movement due to injury, sickness or lack of exercise increases constipation.
Some people find a change in routine, like travelling, change of eating time, sleeping time, change of water etc, a cause of constipation.
Pregnancy also can cause constipation due to the hormones slowing down the passage of food.
Regularly ignoring the urge to clear the bowels either due to not wanting to use outside toilets, or being too busy or any other reason makes this normal urge lessen and ultimately stop.
Some diseases of the nervous system ,the endocrinal system, the metabolic rate or some systemic infections can cause slow movement of the food in the intestine and lead to constipation.

Chronic constipation can be cured by drinking a glass of water in which juice of 1 lemon and 2 teaspoons sugar has been stirred. Drink daily at bedtime for a week to 10 days.
At bedtime, take 1/2 tsp of fennel seed powder with hot water.
Grind green coriander. Add some black salt and black pepper powder. mix and eat.
Eat raw tomatoes regularly. They not only relieve constipation but also give energy to the body.
Eat guava with the seeds daily morning and night.
Take Isabgol husk 3 to 4 tsp with warm water or warm milk at bedtime.
