What to do if you develop a kidney stone and how to survive the crippling agony of the condition.
Identifying a kidney stone
If you develop a kidney stone, you will know about it! The crippling pain that accompanies a stone has been described like child birth.
Pain is similar to a pulled muscle or lower back pain but situated above the left or right hip, slightly towards the buttock.
Unlike other pains, kidney stone pain is identified as 'restless'. The sufferer will not be able to get relief by altering their position (sitting, standing or lying down) despite trying to.
The victim may start vomiting without experiencing nausea or dizziness - this is because the pain receptor is located right next to the vomiting nerve in the brain.
In order to relieve the waves of pain, the sufferer should seek a prescription from their GP for diclofenac and/or paracetamol/codeine (depending on whether the individual can take such medication or not - the GP will advise).
Some sufferers will require nothing less than a diclofenac injection. This may require a trip to accident & emergency.
The sufferer will usually be asked to provide a sample of urine which will be tested for blood, an indication of the presence of a kidney stone.
How to get rid of a kidney stone
There are usually only two ways to get rid of a kidney stone - the victims passes the stone through their urine by drinking lots of water or the bigger stones are blasted by shock wave treatment. In very rare instances, surgery is sometimes required.
Once the stone has been blasted, the patient should drink up to 12 glasses of water a day in order to flush the stones out.
If in hospital, the patient will be asked to allow all urine passed to be tested in order to observe the passing of the stone.
How to avoid a kidney stone
If the kidney stone is tested in hospital, the doctors should be able to identify what the kidney stone was made of. They can be formed of calcium oxalate, struvite, uric acid or cystine. Depending on the kind, the doctor will recommend changes to an individuals diet. e.g. less milk, dairy produce or meat.
Once someone gets a kidney stone, there is a 75% chance that they will be prone to a recurrence at some point.
There are certain ways to minimise a kidney stone, especially in people who have already suffered one:
Drink plenty of water - ordinary water with natural lemon juice is the best thing to drink.
Avoid excess caffeine intake - not so much coffee and tea but soft drinks like colas.
Avoid sodium citrate, an acid regulator found in many diet soft drinks.
