Spirituality is often confused with religion, and is oft misunderstood, oft maligned. Yet, spirituality in practice is not complex.

The spirit of spirituality

When her legs faltered, I merely watched, and soon my legs faltered,
When her legs faltered, I rushed to her aid, and I found myself with four strong legs.

When it rained, I hoarded the water, and I stayed thirsty,
When it rained, I channeled it to my neighbor, and my thirst was quenched.

When I wandered about, I envied their riches, and I stayed poor,
When I wandered about, I pitied their wealth, and I became rich.

When troubles came, I pitied myself, and my sorrows doubled,
When troubles came, I tended to others, and my sorrows were lessened.

When they hurled abuses upon me, I fought back, and I was filled with hurt,
When they hurled abuses upon me, I assessed the fairness of their words, and I was filled with peace.

When the flood of restlessness came upon me, I was fearful and immersed, and I was washed away,
When the flood of restlessness came upon me, I saw myself apart from the water, and I enjoyed my ride.

When they came, I stood my ground, and I was separate from them,
When they came, I receded, and I merged with them.

When I live for me, I die to my Self,
When I live for them, I am one with my Self.
