We take pictures without so much as a second thought - we take pleasure in them. Why do we like pictures so much?

What's in a picture?

When eyes are cast upon an unkempt child,
And find disarming joy and innocence;

When eyes are cast upon a slender neck,
And behold unending grace of noble bearing;

When eyes are cast upon wizened skin,
And detect priceless experiential knowledge;

When eyes are cast upon bony arms and legs,
And sense unpretentious strength;

When eyes are cast upon a damsel in humble attire,
And admire the unalloyed and unassuming elegance;

When eyes are cast upon a feathered creature,
And rejoice in nature's matchless beauty of color and form;

When eyes are cast upon a crested lizard,
And gladden in the sense of curiosity for fellowship;

When eyes are cast upon fog and mountain,
And are lost in rapturous appreciation of mystical eternity;

For, you see, o traveler,
The heart can see beauty well beyond what is seen by the mind.
