You are already happy

Do you know that you are already in possession of the happiness you yearn for, the secret is sit and be still, just for a while.

Stunned by words

I once read a line a book which stopped me dead in my tracks and awakened something very deep within me.
Even now I'm still stunned at the simplicity of how a few little words can be so powerful.
So what was this profound line of letters that has such an effect?

I will tell you. “Don’t try to make yourself happy, you already are
By reading this line and the simple message it contains something shifted within my level of consciousness.

I am a person who has always wanted to be happy in fact I would change that to yearn to be happy. I must have invested thousands and thousands of hours trying to find it. I've searched in Books, seminars, relationships, hobbies and every kind of experience I could try and yes it brought me a reasonable amount of pleasure but not the deep peace I crave.

Always searching

I was beginning to think there was something inherently miserable in my make up, especially during those times when life has been good. After all it's easy to be a down when life is a bit rubbish, many people walk around with long faces when they are they are troubled with what life has dealt them. But when you have a nice Wife, lovely healthy Children a good Job with prospects, enjoying a decent salary and Friends and you think " Ya know I'm still not happy” then that feels sad.

Maybe you may have these feelings yourself and perhaps you have looked for the answer in Drink or Drugs, retail therapy maybe or with another person. Or possibly the excitement of gambling or a myriad of other experiences that a Human being can access in this modern day world. It always seems to feel that the happiness we are craving is somewhere out there.

Obviously there are times we are floating on air when we have achieved a special goal or you have taken delivery of something we craved for but it never lasts, something comes along or the feeling wears off and your back where you started.

Sit and settle

This is why these words resonated so strongly with me. I got it wrong.

It's not out there, It's never has been and never will be. The truth is happiness lies within us. In fact is when you stop trying to find happiness in things that is when real peace begins. The is a wonderful analogy used by some Teachers which is very apt for our Human situation and that is the Glass of dirty water.

If you can imagine the water as our inner lives and the big ole dollop of mud in the glass is our lives, our busyness the way we are always doing, never being.
Shake it up and that is us, we are all big glasses of dirty water with the muck our feelings and emotions all swirling around.

Now place the glass on the table, sit yourself down and slowly observe what happens. Little by little the muck inside slowly descends to the bottom of the glass and the water begins to clear.

Leave it for any length of time and that filthy dirty water becomes crystal clear. That my good friends is us, we are in essence clear inside, we are pure happiness at our core. It doesn't reside out there, in him or her or it or how much you do or don't have.
It is us, we are happiness already we just need to settle and watch and it will all become clear.
Happy Days

Happiness is such a fickle thing for some people to find, but rewarding when you grab it and stay holding on.

Ditto Songbird's comment. There is a real lesson to learn here. There is however always a flip side to everything and this bit of dark humor comes to mind: There I was feeling sad and miserable, when a person came along and said: Why don't you cheer up? Things could be worse. So, I cheered up and sure enough, things got worse. Lol.
