Many people cite wheatgrass juice as having anti cancer properties.

Found in water, Spirulina is actually an edible alga. It is almost pure protein and is packed full of vitamins and minerals and merits the label of super food. There have been numerous studies carried out showing the many benefits of Spirulina which range from improved heart function, reducing high blood pressure, improving kidney and liver function, control of blood sugar levels and also detoxifying the body. It is also said to have anti cancer effects within the body.

The brightly colored yellow spice turmeric, which is used extensively in Indian cooking, is a powerful anti-inflammatory agent. It is particularly useful for arthritis. Curcumin, which is the active ingredient, found in turmeric, is also a naturally powerful anti cancer compound which many studies have confirmed.

Salmon is a rich source of omega 3 fatty acids and Vitamin D which helps to reduce the bad cholesterol in the body which can lead to heart disease. Omega 3 has also been shown to benefit brain health and can protect against Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. Other benefits include improvement of skin elasticity and hair health.

Nuts such as walnuts, Brazil nuts, hazelnuts and almonds are a rich source of minerals and polyphenols. Nuts also contain polyphenols and omega 3 fatty acids and amino acids which can lower bad cholesterol, reduce high blood pressure and help protect against diabetes.

This cruciferous vegetable is renowned for being a powerful anti cancer food due to the compound sulforaphane contained in broccoli. Berries such as blueberries, raspberries and cranberries contain powerful antioxidants known as polyphenols and anthocyanins. Studies show berries to play a significant role in the prevention of Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s and can actually boost memory. Berries also help fight infections of the urinary tract and reduce the risk of heart disease and diabetes.

Tomatoes contain a powerful antioxidant known as lycopene. Studies have shown that lycopene can also help in reducing the risk of breast cancer in women and prostate cancer in men. Tomatoes are one of the few foods where the actual cooking process will not destroy the nutrient content but actually enhance the antioxidant properties.

Coconut Oil
Against popular belief, coconut oil is in fact a remarkably healthy food. The main ingredient of coconut oil, known as lauric acid, is converted to monolaurin inside the body and is a powerful anti bacterial and anti viral agent. This will help prevent a long list of diseases from occurring within your body. Although coconut oil is high in saturated fat, it is actually a medium chained triglyceride which breaks down in the body differently than other fats and is in fact highly beneficial and can actually aid in weight loss and improved heart function.

Another cruciferous vegetable in the list, cabbage, like broccoli, is renowned for having powerful anti cancer properties. Cabbage is also chock full of vitamins and minerals and the benefits include the treatment of jaundice, rheumatism, arthritis, gout, heart disease, stomach ulcers and the control of blood sugar levels. The rich iodine content of cabbage nourishes the nervous system and helps protect the brain from oxidation.
