3 Things to avoid when trying out ways to improve memory (and life in general)

In some cases, the ability to forget can be a blessing but the ability to remember is a lot more important. Whether it’s something as elementary such as where you put your car keys or something a lot more specific and specialized like mathematic equations; memory plays a crucial role.

You might not need to remember every event that took place since your childhood, but you should be able to remember what you had for lunch that day. If you cannot remember something so basic then you should start trying out some ways to improve memory. Your bad memory can cost you dearly. This is why there are so many memory improvement tips out there to help you boost it up a little.

No matter what memory techniques you use to improve your memory, you need to remove a lot of things from your lifestyle in order to improve your memory. Here are a few things that can harm your memory, no matter what memory improvement tips you follow.

1 - Sleep Deprivation

When you force your brain to remember a lot of things then you are pushing your brain to do more work. Since your brain is working harder, it needs to have enough rest. If you don’t provide your brain with the required amount of rest then all your memory improvement techniques are bound to fail. When your brain is fatigued it cannot spare enough energy to remember things, it requires that energy for more important things, such as keeping you on the lookout for danger. As such, sleep deprivation has an incredibly negative effect on your efforts to improve your memory.

2 – A Bad Diet

When you start a memory improvement journey and set out ways to improve your memory, make sure to eat according to your goals. This means that you need to have a balanced and healthy diet for the benefit of your memory. The reason behind this is that what you eat; the vitamins and minerals you get from the food can affect your memory.

People who have a high-calorie intake in their diet have a hard time memorizing things. At the same time, your body needs a certain amount of carbohydrates to retain memory. It has been seen that those with a low carb diet show decreased memory retention. This is why it is a necessity to have a balanced diet and avoid an unhealthy one. On top of the, it does improve your overall health.

3 – Substance Addiction

The problem isn’t the addiction itself, but the substance that you are addicted to, since it is the one that causes negative effects to all the shots you take at improving your memory. Smoking is something that has an ambiguous effect on memory.

This is because some studies prove a decline in the power of recalling in smokers, but the nicotine, in fact, can help memory. Alcohol, on the other hand, has a very clear negative effect on memory. All researches show that alcohol consumption can hinder all efforts of bettering your memory. Substances, like marijuana, also set back memory significantly after a certain amount of usage. There are very few addictive substances that do not affect our ability to remember directly.

This is why when trying to improve your memory you need to have a regimented and a regulated lifestyle.
