A Look at Bilharzia Fluke Worms

Bilharzia is the name of a group of flukes or flatworms. They are named after the German Physician, Theodore Bilharz. These worms are parasites in the blood of man and animals. The disease which they cause is known as Bilharziasis. The bilharzia worm is one of the most harmful parasites of South America and Africa.

It is especially widespread in Egypt. These destructive flukes live in the veins of the urinary organs and the lower parts of the body of human beings. Bilharzia worms cause injury to the blood vessels, and excessive bleeding into the urine. The irritation of the bladder and rectum which they cause may result in cancer. In the treatment of bilharziasis, various compounds on antimony have been found useful. The ideal treatment is prevention. By controlling the snails which carry the parasites, many cases can be prevented.
