African Vegetables For Good Health

There are much more than 300 various species of the traditional African vegetables that are eaten all around the African countries. The most common ones include but are not limited to; amaranths, (from the Amaranthus species), spiderplant (Cleome gynandra), nightshades (Solanum species), cowpeas (Vigna unguiculata), eggplant (Solanum aethiopicum), African kale (Brassica carinata) and jute mallow (Corchorus olitorius).
The most amazing fact about these vegetables is that they are not only nutritious but also medicinal, these vegetables were eaten by the African fore fathers and they have been passed to the present generations and there is hope beyond doubt that they are here to stay. This is because they are gaining access even to the non African countries. There was a time when some new vegetables like cabbages and carrots were coming too fast, but yet still the African traditional vegetables have been gaining back the fame even more than was expected. These vegetables are being grown by both small and large scale farmers both for subsistence and commercial use, and they rate of export of these vegetables to the western countries shows how they are really gaining fame even in the other parts of the world. The growing of these vegetables in Africa has a double role of both boosting food security as well as income generation to the household.
There are so many ways that have been invented on the storage of these vegetables, they can be boiled and refrigerated or even be dried and stored in a dried place and this will ensure that even if one has them in plenty they will not get spoil or wasted. These vegetables can be well grown in dry environment just as they can do well in wetlands. Anyone who has eaten them has always had a positive remark and also recommended them to other people. These vegetables are known for the content of calcium, iron, fiber and other minerals that are essential to the body.

Thanks for sharing such a good article. I love vegetables. I'm not familiar with these but I'm sure they are very good.
