Afternoon nap or siesta is generally known as a trade mark of lazy fellows. But the concept is changing. Now it is becoming accepted that siesta is good for your health and it makes you more energetic, bright and sharp.

Feeling tired and sleepy after lunch? Afternoon nap will refresh you

When you are at your office or work place do you feel a little tired and sleepy after having lunch? I do. And I know most others are also like that. When I feel tired and sleepy in the afternoon, I take a short nap irrespective of whether I am in my office or at home. The only difference is that the nap will last longer while I am at home and also that it will be taken in bed. Since no bed is provided in the office, I make it convenient to rest my head on the table and take my siesta. It will only last for a quarter of an hour or so at the most. My sleepiness, boredom and tiredness will be gone after about five minutes of waking from my afternoon nap. It is true that I feel a little bad immediately after waking from the afternoon nap. But that feeling will be gone very soon and I will feel refreshed and more energetic after that.

What about you? Are you also in the habit of taking an afternoon nap? If not, why don’t you try that? I know that it is possible only if your employer doesn’t object to it. And it is true that most of them think that it is a sign of laziness and are not likely to give their approval for the siesta. But such ideas are fast changing and there is a possibility of the afternoon nap getting widely approved and encouraged at work places.

What studies about afternoon nap bring to light

A study conducted in Greece revealed that the risk of heart-related death is 37% less in persons who took a 30 minute afternoon nap at least thrice a week.

In countries where afternoon nap is common, the rate of occurrence of heart disease is lower

If you take a 20-minute nap after about eight hours of your waking up, it will be better for your stamina than sleeping 20 minutes more before waking up in the morning.
A study among college students proved that an afternoon nap improves the capacity to learn new tasks.

A study by NASA showed that when pilots were allowed to take a nap for 26 minutes during their working hours, their efficiency increased by 34%.

Afternoon nap relieves your stress and makes you energetic.

Aren't these facts enough to make siesta a habit for you? Read on to know more.

We rely on caffeine (in the form of coffee and tea) to keep us going while we are at work. It will make us feel good for a short time only. Instead, if one gets an afternoon nap the freshness and energy he gets will be lasting much longer.

It is said that great men like Albert Einstein, Leonardo da Vinci, Napoleon Bonaparte and John F.Kennedy were in the habit of taking afternoon nap.

How long should a good afternoon nap last?

It is advised that the afternoon nap should be over before one gets into deeper sleep. Considering that, a 20-30 minute nap is desirable. If it goes on for a much longer period, the effect can be negative and one may find it difficult to come out of the resultant drowsiness easily. So you may set an alarm, if it is necessary, to limit your nap. The nap can be taken after the mid day meal. Smoking and intake of caffeine (in the form of coffee, tea etc.) should be avoided before the nap.

Corporate Business Houses encourage afternoon nap of employees

Many companies have become aware of the advantages of their employees taking a short afternoon nap. The main attraction being that they become fresh and more efficient after the nap. This increases productivity. So some companies are now encouraging afternoon nap and they provide nap areas for their employees. Many others will follow this example, we may hope.
So why are you waiting? Just think of making afternoon nap a habit, if it is not already like that.

Thanks Pradeep, I have been following this practice for eight years. It became possible as I return home at 2 pm from office. I wake up at 6am and knock off for the night after midnight. The main reason was not to strain my eyes for long reading or working on the computer. But my nap is for an hour! I think I deserve it as after I wake up I get busy, now with what else - our Wikinut to meet up with our dear friends! siva

Yeah - it's what people like to call a 'power nap' these days. Apparently Margaret Thatcher relied on her power naps to keep her going! Why oh why did I think of Margaret Thatcher! Oh, gosh!! Lovely to read such a well-put-together article. Good for you. I'm following your pages now.

I love this article! I wish I could get my 92 year old Dad to understand the importance of naps!! He forces himself to stay awake all day, and knows nothing about sleep deprivation. He is so sleep deprived that he is not even aware of it when he doses off. Thanks for writing on this subject!! I am now your follower!!

Great article Pradeep, I off course wholly believe in taking a nap, and since my office is at home, I take a twenty minute snooze after lunch every day on my bed.
