Drinking alcohol is a central activity in our society, although the use of alcohol is avoided if it is against religion or ethnic tradition.

Alcoholic Beverages and Health


Alcohol is also considered as drug. It contains chemicals that are hazardous to one’s health. Although in the coldest countries, alcohol can make them wars, alcoholism is one of their problems. Also, alcohol is a traditional beverage during celebrations, such as birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, and other occasions. Alcohol causes many problems ranging from accidents, injuries, and personal relationships to birth defects and diseases.

The use misuse, and abuse of alcohol go back to primitive times. During the Stone Age, man found that chewing certain berries made his head lighter. This brought about the discovery of the manufacture of alcoholic beverages. The making of wine became popular in the Mediterranean countries. During Middle Ages, drunkenness was reported as a serious problem. Also, alcohol was used by colonists who settled in America for religious and medicinal reasons. Alcoholism has become a problem of all ages. Family ties, occupations, and many others have been destroyed. People who do not know how to cope with their problems positively turn to alcohol as a buffer for their stress; yet, their problems remain unsolved.

Why do people Drink Alcohol?

Drinking alcohol is a central activity in our society, although the use of alcohol is avoided if it is against religion or ethnic tradition. Activities and gatherings are considered as boring without alcohol. People think that alcohol makes an activity colorful, without realizing the harmful effect on human health. Alcohol may also cause an accident when a driver is drunk.

The following are beliefs of people who take alcoholic beverages:

1. Alcohol increase warmth during cold days.
2. Increased sex performance and to make the romantic relationship deeper when they have taken alcohol.
3. Makes a person bold and relaxed instead of feeling shy, tense or anxious.
4. Enhances manhood.
5. Helps in meeting friends to improve socialization.

Alcohol may be used as medicine to relive tension and stress

1. Helps unclog arteries and veins (blood vessels)
2. Anesthesia for minor operations
3. Appetizer (before or during mean at least 1 bottle of beer)

Classification of Alcohol Drinkers

1. Abstainer- Drinks less once a year or does not drink.
2. Infrequent Drinkers- Drinks small amount per typical drinking occasion or at most once a month.
3. Light Drinker- drinks once a month at most and drinks medium amounts per typical dink occasion, or drinks no more than 3-4 times a month.
4. Moderate Drinker- Drinks at least once a week and medium amount per typical drinking occasion or 3-4 times a month.
5. Heavy Drinkers- Drinks at least once a week and medium amount per typical drinking occasion 3-4 times a month and large amount per occasion.

The person may suffer the so-called hangover when the Blood Alcohol Content drops and the sobering process occurs. A traditional way of curing the hangover is to take black coffee. Coffee contains caffeine, a stimulant that increases the heart rates. The modern ways to cure the condition is to take milk, take a bath, or walk in the fresh air. Drinkers experience psychological symptoms such as anxiety, guilt, and depression. Taking solid nutritious food and rest is also a remedy for a hangover aside from the above remedies listed.
