Animal Protein...As Bad as Cigarettes

The latest study suggesting that eatting too much animal protein is as bad for you as smoking a pack of cigarettes a day.

A Memory

In 1973, I was hanging out baby diapers, when a very old woman bounded up the hill. She had a cigarette dangling from her lips as she pulled my laundry off the line and told me that I don't know how to wash, and quickly began rewashing the diapers.

She was very wrinkled but moved like an athlete and, as a person who considers sloth a virtue, didn't mind a bit if she was going to wash the diapers.

I could see Aunt Maggie glaring but I didn't react, and in minutes my diapers were on the line. Miss Maggie called to me and I went to her and she told me, (I'm translating the patois here) that "I was not to talk to this woman as she was the scandal of the district." The old lady, a good forty feet away heard the words and responded; (again translating) "Why was she a scandal?"

Leaving out a lot of the details, this woman, with the cigarette in her mouth was 99 years old and her boyfriend, (a young boy as Aunt Maggie put it) was only 69. The Scandal replied that she couldn't find any man her age to 'service' her.

I left the debate and went to my room where I lit my own cigarette.

Life and Death in Jamaica

In 2013 people in Jamaica don't live to be 99 as easily and as healthily as they did forty years ago. This is due to diet.

In 1973 no one knew of diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, even cancer. Jamaicans died because someone killed them, either via murder or motor manslaughter, accident, (like falling off a roof, drowning in a river, grabbing a live wire) or because they were over 100, Few people died of diseases.

How people used to eat; (I'm talking poor people, rural people, not multi-millionaires, politicians or business leaders) is a lot of 'food' very little 'town food' and very little meat.

'Food' is yam, green banana (boiled like a potato), cassava, sweet potato, potato, dasheen, eatten together, to wit, a plate full of a number of starches, some vegetables, usually tomato, and in the middle of the plate, the 'Watchman', this could be a small fish in gravey, a small piece of chicken or beef in gravey.

The amount of animal protein most people ate a day would be about the size of two cigarettes. The amount of starches and vegetables was a lot.

New Modern Unhealthy


As late as 1980 many people had never eatten a 'hamburger' or 'KFC'. If they went to a restaurant, (I'm talking local people, not hotels) they expected a large plate with yam, banana, dumpling, etc, and a piece of meat the size of two cigarettes in a kind of stew.

A lot of people, however, had switched from 'food' to rice, and were eatting meat at least twice a day, a whole pack of cigarettes sized meat portion twice a day.

To live to be 99 today often means being a zombie in an old age home. Certainly not able to bound up a steep hill, grab diapers off a line, wash them and get them back up in minutes.

This is due to diet.

Lighting Up


In the '70s when I was attending University most kids smoked. We smoked in class, we smoked in the canteen, we smoked just about everywhere. We smoked during exams. During the 80s when SMOKING IS BAD FOR YOU became the shriek, a lot of people quit.

Today, those who quit and are still alive are grossly overweight, have diabetes, hypertension, stroke, and look very old. They look as old as our teachers, if not older. This is due to diet. And the fact they've replaced smoking with the consumption of junk which they think is food.

Coconut Oil


In 1970 we made coconut oil It's not hard. Get a heap of dried coconuts, a grater and a bowl. Crack the coconuts and grater them. When you're done pour in water. Squeeze the coconut in the water. Keep squeezing it until fairly dry, and put what we call the 'trash' one side.

When you've finished squeezing the water is white and thick and you're going to boil it. You are going to take the gratered pieces to the chicken coop. Chicken love it.

You boil up the water and keep boiling until the top has a custard. You then spoon off the custard and give it to kids to eat. Kids love it.

What you have left is absolutely pure coconut oil. You use it on your food, on your hair, on your skin. You put a capful into the water when you bathe the baby. You put a few capfuls into your shampoo. You mix it with any kind of body lotion.

People ate coconut oil for centuries.

All of a sudden there was this big American sponsored program that coconut oil was bad for you and you should eat 'vegetable oil'. A lot of people fell for it. Those who lived in town stopped buying coconut oil and bought 'vegetable oil'.

Those who made coconut oil in country ignored American sponsored programs. They didn't eat KFC either, had never been in a Burger King, but they were old.

After all, a ninety year old isn't going to change her ways and eat 'healthy vegetable oil' after living ninety years on 'unhealthy' coconut oil.

But those who were in their twenties, who'd grown up on stuff in boxes and bottles and think KFC and Burger King are food will immediately buy the 'healthy' vegetable oil.

The Truth Wins


Now, everyone is being told that 'vegetable oil' isn't as healthy as coconut oil. This means that now a bottle of coconut oil sells for four times the vegetable oil.

Today the breaking news is that eating too much animal protein is as bad for you as smoking a pack of cigarettes a day.

The Point

Cigarettes aren't as bad for you as you have been made to believe. They aren't healthy but neither is coca cola, chocolate ice cream, high heels, or listening to loud music. If you smoke ten cigarettes or less a day you're not much at risk. In fact, if you don't tell your doctor, he won't know, even if you do a chest x-ray.

Eating too much meat, is bad for you. Eating junk food is bad for you. Vegetable oil is bad for you. The fact no one is going to put warnings on these things doesn't mean they are safe.

To put it coarsely, when a 99 yer old woman bounds up a hill, and needs a 69 year old man to 'service' her, I'll use her for an example.

glad you wrote this kaylar...children in China are overweight because of the bad food they eat which is sold by large Food companies world wide now...such a shame...

It is amazing how the world is getting so fat. In Jamaica we have enourmously fat people. They can barely walk.

I went up to America and the people were so fat they had to ride little cars around the supermarket cause they couldn't walk.

Marvelous article, Kaylar. What you say here is spot on. My own diet is much like that which you outlined, but I live in the tropics so finding yams, or any one of at least forty species of banana, is no problem at all. I very rarely eat red meat, perhaps an ounce or two a year. But I do eat fish a lot and chicken very occasionally. Almost all my food is vegetable based and spiced! Fruit and vegetables are abundant here, so I am not likely to starve. On a darker note, women in Indonesia who were brought up on a simple village diet did not get breast cancer, womb cancer or ovarian cancer. With increasing disposable income, many men and women here have taken to a western diet. They feed their children on American junk food. More convenient for a working mother! Many children are now obese and many women now die from cancer. There is also an increasing number of both men and women dieing prematurely from stroke or heart attack. This is the result of eating foods laden with salt, MSG and animal fats. My wife was brought up on a simple village diet and now in her early 50s is still in perfect health. She doesn't smoke, but I do. Whoops.

It is the same thing in Jamaica. People are so unhealthy today...simple diet is healthy

More and more people are eating less meat, and realizing the harm. I know in the USA meat is even worse due to the hormones given to the animals

They give the chickens hormones here. In 6 weeks, from egg to plate.

The fact is Big Business used to push cigarettes until reports made smoking a problem. The point is the quantity one needs ... i.e. 2 packs a day....
however, the hysteria took over.

The point that I always go for...is when a person who is over 90 is active, whatever she's doing has got to be right.
