More than a complete food, sweet potato is a beauty food that can maintain youthfulness. Read on to discover its ant-aging secrets.

Many people who are beauty conscious spent a lot of money in buying commercial anti-aging products for maintaining their youthfulness but a recent discovery of a natural source of antioxidants points out that one could just grow right in the backyard a source with no penny to spend at all. This refers to a crop which is oftentimes frowned upon by many people because it has been branded as the “poor man’s crop”, yet, associated with dullness as an old story told and retold by many to ”go home and plant camote” to a child who was not able to answer the question of a teacher in school. Camote is a local name of sweet potato. Probably, this discovery of outmost importance in the human diet would turn around sweet potatoes’ stature in the consuming public.

A promising anti-aging food

While sweet potato is one of the most nutritious foods in nature, and in fact, it has been said time and again that it is a complete food because of its richness in nutritional contents, it is quite difficult to make its servings popular in the diet especially among the youngsters and children. However, a report from the Food and Fertilizer Technology Center (FFTC) in Taiwan in cooperation with the Rural Development Administration (RDA) of South Korea indicated that sweet potato contains antioxidants such as chlorogenic acid, isochlorogenic acid and caffeic acid.

With this discovery, it is hoped that its lowly stature of sweet potato in the diet may be elevated to a health and beauty food that is so useful in maintaining not only a healthy but young and beautiful body. Beauty and anti-aging products available in the market, never mind if they are effective or not and yet expensive, are often bought by age and wrinkle conscious people. People often want to look younger especially the women so it is not surprising if they buy anything they have heard of from other people to reduce wrinkling in their faces, a sign of aging or getting older.

Free radicles and homegrown antioxidant

The discovery of an antioxidant in sweet potato could be the key to live a life with less medicine. So, better include sweet potato in the home garden to have a readily inexpensive source of antioxidants for the family

Antioxidants are mostly present in fruits and vegetables. These are phytochemicals that neutralize or counterbalance the free radicles generated by the body during normal metabolism.

On the other hand, free radicals are the most vicious and toxic by-products of metabolism. When these are not neutralized, they can travel through the body cells, disrupting the structures of proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, and cause cell damages. These damages are believed to contribute to aging and degenerative diseases such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes, stroke, cataract, and the like.

Antioxidant content in sweet potato are higher in their leaves than in the tops than in the roots and petioles.

Studies conducted in the Philippines, according to a Philippine Information Agency (PIA) news dispatch, revealed that there are some unique root storage proteins with potent antioxidant effects. These proteins had one-third the antioxidant activity of glutathione, one of the body’s most impressive internally produced antioxidants.

Nutritionally packed antioxidant food

All parts of the sweet potato especially the leaves and tops contain protein, lipids, carbohydrates, calcium, iron, phosphorus, and vitamins A and C. They are relatively low in calories and have no fat. They are rich in beta carotene, having five times the recommended daily allowance of Vitamin A in one sweet potato, as well as loaded with potassium. These nutrients help to protect against heart attack and stroke, and the potassium helps maintain fluid and eletrolyte balance in the body cells, as well as normal heart function and blood pressure.

It was also revealed that as an excellent source of vitamin A (in the form of beta-carotene) and a very good source of vitamin C, sweet potatoes have healing properties as antioxidants that work in the body to eliminate free radicals. These free radicals damage cells and cell membranes and are associated with the development of conditions like atherosclerosis, diabetic, heart disease, and colon cancer. This may explain why beta-carotene and vitamin C have both been shown to be helpful in preventing these conditions.

Sweet potato is good for smokers

Smoking have serious repercussions on health including lung, heart and respiratory diseases, among others. "Every puff of cigarette smoke is bristling with disease-generating free radicals", according to Dr. Emmanuel C. Opara of Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina. While nutrition may help, people who are addicted of cigarette smoking tend to have poorer nutritional habits. The discovery of antioxidants from sweet potato therefore may be a good news for smokers. “If you or someone you love is a smoker, or if you are frequently exposed to second hand smoke, then making vitamin A-rich foods, such as sweet potatoes, part of your healthy way of eating, may save your life, suggests a research conducted at Kansas State University.”
