Asthma accompanies allergies. It is aggravated in winter. Asthma attacks the breathing passage, obstructing the breathing passage. Conventional medical treatments involve bronchodilators which relax the bronchial muscles, clearing the breathing path. Ayurveda and other ancient medical systems provide a holistic healing for asthma.

Ayurveda provides a holistic healing for asthma

Asthma is a breathing disease, affecting people of all ages in the modern polluted world. This genetic and environmental disease is affecting more children in the polluted world than the adults. Affecting the breathing passage and lungs, asthma causes wheezing, congestion in the chest, shortness of breath and coughing. Although there is no cure for asthma, it can be managed and treated by changes in lifestyle and environment. Alternative medical systems such as Ayurveda and Chinese acupuncture can provide relief from asthmatic attacks.

Two conditions involved in asthma

1) When the small bronchial muscles surrounding the bronchial tubes contract breathing is obstructed. This is treated by bronchodilators that relax the bronchial muscles.

2) Linings of the bronchial tubes become swollen which actually trigger the asthmatic symptoms. Conventional treatments relieve this condition by using steroids and reducing inflammation.

Alternative treatments for asthma

Treatments for asthma may be routine or emergent. Chronic asthmatic people take routine drugs. But they should be prepared for an emergency at any time, even if they keep asthma under control for years. In addition to the herbal medicines, regular use of vitamin C provides some relief. Supplementation of vitamin B12 and B6 is said to be supportive in treating asthma.

Ayurveda treats asthma successfully with strict diet regimen and other Ayurvedic methods such as Ayurvedic massage and Panchakarma.

Ayurvedic herbal treatments

1) Most promising and natural Ayurvedic treatment is the use of the herb tylophora. Botanically called Tylophora indica, Indian Ipecac, Antamul(Hindi), Naippalai or nancharuppan in Tamil, this herb is very effective in clearing the airway. Though it may cause nausea, taking 200mg tylophora leaves daily has been found effective.

2) The gummy resin of the Indian tree Boswellia is good for asthma. It inhibits inflammation and reduces asthmatic symptoms, although it is mainly meant for rheumatoid arthritis.

3) Ayurveda suggests drinking warm tea using the herbs that can reduce inflammation and clear the airway. A teaspoon of fresh ginger juice mixed with a cup of fenugreek decoction and honey is suggested as a mild dose.

4) In the globalized world, Ayurvedic medicines are available everywhere. Ayurvedic preparations such as Agastya Rasayana and Chyawanprash are popular for treating asthma. Chyawanprash is prepared with amla, rich vitamin C source, and other ingredients that fight against asthma.

Asthma can be treated successfully with Ayurvedic treatments. The diet regimens and other lifestyle changes may help easy recovery from the attacks of asthma.
