A discussion on the health risks of refined sugars.

Sugar Detox

I was dying and in menopause at age 38 from my life long sugar addiction. I had suspected that this cheap, delicious, on-every-friggin-corner substance was at the base of my health problems. My consciousness about sugar didn't help though, because I was thoroughly addicted.

I picked up a copy of Sugar Blues and was blown away by what I read. According to the author, the amazing William Dufty (I was privileged to know him before he passed), sugar has ruled our world economy for thousands of years and was the original cause of slavery! You heard me. Read the book. It will blow your hair back.

Feeling like a pawn in a global conspiracy spurred me to face my addiction head on. The fact that I was dying had a little to do with it too. I moved onto an Eden-type farm and ate nothing but foods that came directly out of the ground - no organic snacks, no processed foods, just what God provided.

Within a week my symptoms were almost nonexistent. In two weeks I was pain free for the first time in twenty years. Within a month I started menstruating again. Nine years later I conceived naturally and birthed my first child at age 47. Every aspect of my life had changed by beating my addiction to what a Romanian anesthesiologist called one of the three white poisons - sugar, flour, and salt.

The man who taught me how to eat Eden-style (My dear friend Patrick McEachern) and I opened a Sugar Detox Center on his magical organic farm. We took clients in one or two at a time. We provided them with healthy whole foods, an animal to care for and a ton of validation. We listened, sympathized and affirmed their stories while we all worked to stay "Clean and Sober" from the sweet, white, poison.

The results for our clients was as miraculous as they had been for me. We had an Autistic client,a diabetic, a child with ADHD and a Schizophrenic. There results were all different and equally spectacular.

What I want you to understand most of all is that ten different people can hammer themselves with sugar and they will probably have a wide variety of health woes from it. One will get cancer, one diabetes, one might develop Alzheimer's and another may become Schizophrenic. But the sugar was the contributing factor in every case.

How can that be? Sugar is an acid and we are meant to be slightly alkaline beings. When you get too acidic your body generally starts breaking down based on your genetic/emotional weaknesses. So if you have a family history of breast cancer or emotional trauma of a sexual nature you may very well end up with breast cancer. Whereas your partner, on the very same diet may contract something totally different but the cause and the cure is the same.

The bottom line is that there is NO downside to eating less sugar and those having more room in your diet for whole, nutrient-dense foods. Now back away from teh chocolate - nobody has to get hurt here!

I have heard of two white poisons, so have been avoiding them. But flour? I hope brown sugar is alright and also dark chocolate. Thanks for this useful post - siva

Flour turns into sugar in the blood system. I use brown rice flour or buckwheat flour - something that is a whole grain to start. Sorry brown sugar is no more healthy. I use Stevia which comes from a plant that is naturally very sweet but doesn't affect our blood sugar like regular sugars. As for dark chocolate, think of the old Frito Lay commercials - bet you can't eat just one - A few bites of dark chocolate can be healthful, but can you eat just a few bites? My best advice - stick to foods that are still in the package God gave them - an apple, a pear, salad greens. Natural and whole is best.

Very informative article. It is kind of scary at the same time. If, you think about it. Sugar is in just about everything.

So true. Did you know that catsup has 8% more sugar than ice cream. salad dressing, breads, cereals, baby formula. We are a nation of sugar addicts thanks to our food manufacturers. By cutting your company's spaghetti sauce with sugar you gained volume by adding a cheap substance, preserve the food and get everybody addicted to your brand. EVERYBODY is doing it. So we are back to packaging. If it is still in the package (Skin) God gave it - that is a wonderful healthy start.
