Making choices about where to walk can be restrictive for some. Consider these options for your own safety and fitness.

Considering Safety when Walking

One of the most important things to think about when embarking on a walking programme is to consider your own safety. I'm lucky in that where I live allows plenty of opportunities and choice when deciding where to walk outdoors. But not everybody is that lucky.
You need to think about your own safety, choosing places where you will not be placing yourself at risk because of isolation or too much traffic. It's best to choose a walking place where others are out and about, away from city streets that are too busy with traffic and where you feel comfortable.

Neighbourhood Streets and Parks

Walking outdoors is, for me anyway, the most enjoyable place to walk. If you are able, choose a route that has good walking paths, gives you an interesting outlook along the way and gives you the added of pleasure of becoming more aware of your neighbourhood.
If walking in the streets is a safe option for you, vary your route, so that you're not always encountering the same things. That will help you avoid becoming over familiar with your surroundings and help prevent boredom setting in.

Indoor Walking Opportunities

When the weather is too cold or too hot for walking, or the area you live in is not the safest place to be out on he streets or in the park, consider other options.
Some people use a nearby mall, plaza, or shopping centre as their regular walking circuit. The larger the complex the better. If walking the entire area of he mall is not far enough for you, do the circuit several times.
Maybe you live in an apartment building of several storeys. Make the most of the staircase, walking up and down them several times. This adds extra challenge to the walking workout.
One thing I recently discovered was the abundance of Home Walking videos available on YouTube. There are many really good ones to choose from that will enable you to walk for varying lengths of time in your own lounge.
Of course, if you're lucky enough to have gym membership or access to fitness equipment, that too serves well as an indoor walking programme.

The Right Choice For You

It's important to choose the right walking place for you. Hopefully the options presented here will show you that if one thing isn't available there are others to choose from.
Remember always that your own safety is the important factor when choosing where to walk, especially outdoors.
Now, put on your shoes, start walking and enjoy the benefits of increased fitness and health.

I have a lake I can walk to, but it is down hill, so it is up hill to get home.

I can relate to that - when I lived in Wellington we lived at the top of the highest hill in our suburb, to go anywhere meant going down, but there was always the need to return.

Are you the Val from Triond? I'm going to tell some of my old AC friends to come try it here. Great to know you are here.

I think one of the reasons my son moved to NZ was because of the beautiful landscape to walk through.
