Polycystic ovarian syndrome is the most common endocrine disorder affecting the woman of reproductive age. It affects about 12-18% of women of reproductive age. The cause of PCOS is not fully understood but genetics play a major role and PCOS seems to run in families.

It is important for a woman with polycystic ovary syndrome to take a proper diet in order to manage the symptoms of the disease. Foods to add in your diet

Fruits and Green Vegetables - Include a lot of fruits and green leafy vegetables in your diet. Green vegetables are a rich source of minerals and vitamins, especially vitamins B2, B3, B5 and B6 which play an important role in sugar and fat metabolism and helps in reducing PCOS symptoms. Fruits also contain various minerals and vitamins along with phytonutrients and fibers.

Healthy Fats - Unsaturated fats and essential fatty acids are important for the PCOS diet. They help in maintaining hormonal balance and healthy weight.

Organic Meat - Include organic meat in your diet, which is a rich source of lean proteins and helps in controlling weight gain.

Carbohydrates with low GI - Though it is suggested to have a low-carb diet you can have carbohydrates with low Glycemic Index such as beans, non-starchy vegetables, legumes, and lentils. Such carbohydrates do not raise blood sugar levels as they take a long time to break down.

Foods to avoid

Foods that raise the insulin level in the body should be avoided for controlling PCOS symptoms.
High GI Foods - They are not only high in calories but also lead to a sudden increase in blood sugar level and disrupt ovulation.

Dairy Products - Consuming milk and other dairy products causes increase in the testosterone levels in the body and further enhances the PCOS symptoms.

Soy Products - Including soy in your diet can lead to delay in the ovulation.

Unhealthy Fats - Saturated, hydrogenated, and trans fats should be completely avoided as they make the PCOS symptoms worse.
