Here is the description about what does 'blackheads' means, what causes them, what increases the risk of blackheads, their prevention and cure.

What does blackheads actually means??

Blackheads or 'open comedones' are the pores plugged with oil. These are not the dirt deposited in the pores, the normal misconception. The blackhead pores are usually wider than a normal pore. These are the result of active sweat glands. These are formed due to the reaction of sebum (the waxy substance that are produced by the sweat glands), air and dead cells which results in the oxidation of the melanin pigments. That is the reason for its black color.

Causes of blackheads:

There can be many reasons that may result in blackheads. Some of the causes are discussed below:
1.Improper hygiene may lead to black heads due to deposition of oil in the pores.
2.Environmental pollution may also lead to blackheads and the case can get worsen if proper hygiene is not maintained.
3.Sometimes it can be even genetic. Some people inherits this problem.
4.Hormones can also be the reason. During puberty, the increase in the level of sex hormones in males and the change in the level of hormones in females during pregnancy and menstrual cycle may result in the formation of blackheads.
5.High stress results in the increased secretion of oil which may result in blackheads.
6.Oil based cosmetics and make-ups can block the pores resulting in blackheads.
7.The medicines that contains lithium and steroids are also found to result in the formation of the blackheads.
8.High humidity results in excess production of oil hence increasing the chances of blackheads. People of the places with high humidity are more prone to blackheads.

Risk Factors:

It's clear from the above discussion what could be the risk factors:
1.Poor hygiene.
2.Excess use of moisturizers and makeups. If you use moisturizers, makeups and sunscreen on a regular basis then you could develop blackheads.
3.High stress.
4.Tight clothing. Tight cloths results in physical irritation and results in excess secretion of oil by the body.

Here are some ways by which you can prevent blackheads:
1.Maintaining hygiene.
2.Drinking 3-4 liters of water per day.
3.Applying groundnut oil mixed with lemon juice (in a ratio of 1:1, i.e. equal amount), on the face.
4.Paste of fenugreek (methi) is effective in preventing as well as curing blackheads. Apply the fresh paste on the face and leave overnight. Rinse with warm water.
5.Using facial scrubs also prevents blackheads.
6.Boil water up-to a tolerable temperature. Damp a towel or a big clean piece of cloth in it and put the hot towel on your face. Repeat the process 3-4 times. This will open up your pores and hence will prevent blackheads. This method can also be used to cure blackheads.

Natural remedies for blackheads:

Here are some points that will help you out:
1.Mix lemon juice with salt and pepper and apply on the affected areas. Rub gently properly. Rinse with warm water.
2.Steam will also work. Boil the water with a top on it and then remove the top and put your face over it to allow the steam on your face. Put a towel to cover your head so that the steam could not escape. You can add some essential oils too as per your wish (optional). When you are done gently rub your nose with a cloth or towel and all the blackheads will be out.
3.Mix one fourth cup of hot water with one spoon of Epson salt with and a few drops of iodine and mix them well and allow them to cool down. Then apply it using cotton or clean piece of cloth and allow it to dry. When it is dried remove it gently using a clean piece of cloth.
4.Put some toothpaste on the affected areas and allow it there for 15-20 minutes. Then remove it by rubbing with towel.
5.Scrubs also helps in getting rid of blackheads. Mix honey/glycerin and sugar or salt and then exfoliate the affected areas.
6.Apply rose water everyday twice after washing your face.
7.Take warm shower to open up your pores.
8.Apply the paste of ground radish seed in water on the affected areas.
9.Put dried basil leaves in hot water and let it like that for 15- 20 minutes. Then apply the mixture using cotton or a piece of cloth.
10.Mix a few drops (in the ratio of 2:1:1 respectively) of jojoba oil, rose hip oil and lavender oil and apply on the face. It will dissolve the blackheads.
11.A poultice made with grated potatoes cures many different skin blemishes including whiteheads and blackheads.
12.Another effective method is applying the mixture of mint juice and turmeric on the affected areas. Leave it as such for 20-25 minutes.

Some friendly advice:

1.Do not go for steams if you have very sensitive skin or if you have broken blood vessels. In such cases just go for warm showers.
2.Do not use essential oils near eyes.
3.Always use essential oils in diluted form.
4.Do not squeeze out the blackheads. It can result in skin inflammation. Use any of the method of your choice and rub the affected areas gently to eliminate blackheads.
5.Do not use the steam method more than 2 times a week.
6.Sometimes it takes more than one time to completely delete the blackheads (in case if you have those blackheads from a very long time). Do not get hyper in such conditions and never treat your face vigorously again and again at once. Do it one time then repeat the process again the next day. It may take a few days. So, have patience.
7.Do not use very hot water if you're going use the damp towel method (6th point in the prevention section). The water should be at a tolerable temperature otherwise it will cause blisters on your face that I don't think you want to happen with yourself.

I hope this was helpful. If you have some kind of problems then let me know. I will try to help you out.
