Though we know that girls mature faster than before. Now we are told that boys have caught up. They too are beginning to mature faster as well.

Boys are maturing faster

Have you noticed that your boys are maturing faster these days? Perhaps you think your boys are different from other boys because of it. However, according to American Academy of Pediatrics boys are actually maturing between six months and two years faster than expected. This data is going to be reported in November 2012 Pediatrics. The same trend in girls is accepted as medical knowledge. A mega study was done by the same people in 1997 on girls. The data was lacking for the age of boys reaching puberty until now.

Signs of puberty

“The study on boys reaching puberty was designed and conducted through the AAP Pediatric Research in Office Settings (PROS) practice-based research network, a system of hundreds of pediatricians nationwide who contribute data to AAP-led scientific studies on children's health.” The new study on boys was conducted in 41 states. The researchers took the data for puberty characteristic on 4,100 boys.

They found that “Stage 2 genital and pubic hair growth, and early testicular enlargement -- standard indications of pubertal onset -- were six months to two years earlier than documented by data several decades earlier.” The onset of puberty depended up the race of the boys; young boys of African descent matured the fastest. Signs of puberty started on average at 9.14 years for these boys; whereas White boys and Hispanic boys showed the characteristics of maturity around age 10.

Much research is needed

The researchers do not know the reason for earlier onset of puberty in boys and agree that more research is needed. Marcia E. Herman-Giddens, DrPH , one of the researchers of the study maintains, parents, pediatricians, and various health care workers need to help compile more data on the subject.

PROS Director Richard C. Wasserman, MD, MPH, FAAP, states that all parents should be aware of their boy’s level of maturity and if they are maturing at the same rate as other US boys. This information has never been available for them until this study. After all, information on the landmark girls study has been readily available. Now information on boys and contemporary standards of maturity is now available.

When I was a kid in the forties and fifties we were exposed to just a handful of chemicals, but today there are over 80,000 chemicals to which we may be exposing ourselves. This, I suspect strongly, accounts for the exponential rise in Alzheimer's, autism, learning disabilities, ADHD and the like. It may also account for early menstruation ion girls and early puberty in boys.

better eating is known for the height spurts, chemicals and all that have not been proven yet to best of my knowledge. But I do agree with you there could very well be a correlation.

This trend strengthens the case for proper sex education in schools from a much earlier age, so that sexual maturity is matched by social maturity.

I agree with John on this. Here in Canada, Ontario has become the leader in sex education but most of the country have good programs but not going far enough. When I was growing up in the 1940's and 50's, we were given nothing and most felt that even masturbation was something to be ashamed of as well as being very wrong. Blessings.
