Bullying is Vile!

I have just read the very sad case about a young girl from Florida, aged only 12, who was repeatedly bullied online and in her daily life, so she took her own life. Her parents have set up a fund to help pay her funeral expenses, and arrests of two girls have been made. Read on to find out more.

Bullying is Vile!

Whilst watching Loose Women yesterday, I hear about the very sad case of Rebecca Sedwick, a pretty 12 year old girl from Florida, who took her own life by jumping from a building. s According to newspaper reports, she had been repeatedly taunted by bullies, both at school and online, they had suggested she should take her own life because she was " worthless", and she did just that.

I can imagine the grief and heartache her family must be feeling, that they didn't know, and she couldn't tell them. At the age of 12, a young girls thoughts and emotions are all over the place, it's a part of growing up, and sometimes parents seem like distant aliens, no matter how much you love them you feel they might not understand. Being bullied destroys a person's self confidence, creates fear and emotional pain, and at the age of 12, a young girl is very vulnerable to that sort of pressure.

Help was needed

When you are an adult, you can get a different perspective on a situation, whereas at such a young age, sadly, the only way she could see out of her torment was to end her own life.

Bullies operate secretly, the computer is a wonderful place for them to hide behind to issue their threats and ruin people's lives. They are cowards, jealousy of a person who is happy and fulfilled in their own life often sparks them into action.

On Loose women Lisa Maxwell spoke about a new idea in schools, where teachers set aside a time for the pupils to sit down and talk about anything that is worrying them in a group. Not only does it help the victim to unburden themself, it also makes the perpetrators aware of what they have done. the effect it has had, and they may start to fear the consequences of their own actions. If only something like that had been available for Rebecca, maybe she would not have been reduced to thinking that death was her only way out for peace of mind.

I was bullied online

When I first started writing online, I was continually bullied by a person who shall remain nameless. I do forgive them for their actions although I was very hurt at the time, because I believe they don't have a happy life, and thankfully my life is very happy.

They said I was vain and glory seeking, and because I wrote about celebrities that I admire, they said I was cashing in on their celebrity. Anyone of my fellow writers on Wikinut will know that we aren't doing it for the money, because if we were, we would be searching for sites that do pay proper money. this is no disrespect to Wikinut, I am here to share my thoughts with others, and we are a great community.

At the time I stopped writing for a while, and totally lost my confidence in myself. I did not feel complete without writing something every day, it's a big part of who I am, and when you are shy like I am, it gives me a voice. I started to think I was a bad person because they said I was, but what had I done, I didn't know, and I still don't, but this person has now joined forces with another person, who used to be my friend, and they have a hate campaign against me.

Because I am an adult, and can see things differently, I never felt the despair that must come when you are continually being hounded in this way. However it has ruined several social occasions for me, the fear of being ignored by them, or even worse which happened once, verbally attacked in public and the apprehension felt that everyone they meet has been told I am a bad person.

My friends have been wonderful

It's only since then I have reailsed how blessed I am with my true friends. They have stuck by me, and if people have been told I am bad, they don't seem to be listening. I have made mistakes in my life, said things when angry I didn't mean, I am a human being and we all make mistakes, butIi never hold grudges.

I feel anyone who can harbour such hatred towards another human being should look at their own life and try and work out why they are so unhappy, and try to put it right. I will continue to hold my head up and get on with my life, we only get one after all.

In the case of Rebecca, sadly she has been robbed of her life, and I would hope that the people who caused her such misery will change their ways in the future, and be decent to their fellow human beings. I also hope that one day they can forgive themselves for what they have done.

Rebecca's mother has set up a fund to give her daughter a special funeral, and try and raise more awareness about bullying, it's her last chance to help her daughter who so tragically exited this world.

Bravo Carol..I admire your
openness about your online bullying experience, you are doing the right thing in speaking out.
Blow them 'right out' the bloody water Carol, don't allow them to remain anonymous, publicly confront them by naming and shaming
them. Online bullies are pathetic human beings.
You have good friends here Carol, and we all support you,
just remember that when you feel low about this.
That poor young girl, it's unthinkable how she must have felt to have taken her life
Well done my friend, my respects to you.
Mariah xx.

Good afternoon, Carol. I share a similar experience with online comments designed only to bully, taunt, or inflict pain. Mine remained nameless.

However, all of that pales in comparison to Rebecca. I live in Georgia so we have gotten quite a bit of news about her situation. My grand daughter and grand son's teachers have all used this tragic outcome to have a specific day of discussion, much like you talk about in the article. ~Marilyn

I have too Marlyn, sadly there are people out there who lash out as a result of their own inadequacies, as you will be only too well aware of in your particular field of expertise.
It is to be hoped the tragic death of young Rebecca brings more awareness of the need for kids to open up and seek help.

From the adult perspective we can see so many lives wasted. The bullied girl who took her life, the bullies and their parents who are facing jail time and may never fully understand what they've done, the family and friends who will be affected the rest of their lives, having to learn to grieve and cope. I am glad you did not let _nameless Wikinut bullies_ keep you from sharing this wonderful article. Exposure is the key (though in the case of Wikinut, delete works pretty good, too, sometimes...) Have a great day!

Sorry to have misled you Phyl, it's not anyone on Wikinut, I love everyone here, and all treat me with respect. It was facebook, twitter, and another site which has now closed.

Thanks Carol for a post that touches our hearts. Bullies are insecure people out to take their frustration on others especially on those who they think are having an easy time. No one is liked without reason and time the bullies also turned to positive action than getting lost in negativity.

Parents have to reassure their children all the time that they are loved. The victims fall easy prey to insinuations that they are worthless like Rebecca was made to feel. I see some parents here in Asia out to mint money as if it will take care of lives down the line. Big mistake - as such a lifestyle heaps misery all round! To make life meaningful we have to invest our time wisely - siva

Dear Carol ...I read and watched the video clips through tears ...I am so glad you wrote this at this time ...It is a subject that needs to be addressed in every school in such a way that all bullies will be exposed and expelled if necessary to stop their foul behaviour . This is a subject that is very close to my heart as I may write about it and other forms of abuse as I feel led, and tell how God has used me in some small way to bring this into the open ...
God bless you dear friend ....

Thanks for reading Stella, I think we can all help by writing about it, and if it saves just one desperate young person from losing their life, that will be good. Anyone can suffer bullying at any age, it's not just at school

It's a sad day
many go that way
I warn many of FB
stay away...
the world is not as safe today
..but then one has to have one’s own mind..
some comfort from friends and relatives too
..I wish her soul peace
if she has found it
sad indeed a lesson for all who read you
