World is starving. More than half of the world people are unable to fill their tummy at least once a day. Unfortunately a large amount of food is wasted by people who do not think of these starving people.

Hunger the great curse of the modern world

UNO has announced 16 October as World Food Day. Requesting the world to open the portals of mercy to feed the starving millions, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has given the theme “Agricultural cooperatives – key to feeding the world” to focus on the World Food Day of 2012.

The primary aim of the World Food Day is to call for the public awareness of the world food problem and strengthen solidarity in the battle against hunger, malnutrition and poverty. Man has to eat for his survival. It is the fundamental human necessity for survival and well-being.

Hunger the great curse of the modern world

Hunger is a curse created by man himself. It is an indirect terrorism killing millions of people. With all the developed technology, out of 6.8 billion world population more than 925 million people do not have enough to eat. More than 35 million people die of hunger every year. Many of us may not be aware that malnutrition is the key factor contributing to the global child death. Reports say that more than 2.6 million children die every year because of malnutrition. More than two-thirds of the world’s hungry population live in developing countries in Africa and Asia.

Food is the basic right of every human being. It is the primary duty of every government to feed every mouth in the country, especially, the sick, handicapped, elderly people, people affected by calamities and people who cannot work or get a job.

Why this unsolved hunger problem?

Hunger is still torturing the world not because there is not enough food, but because of unawareness and selfishness. Selfishness restricts all sharing. Greed of profit makes the commercial world to hike prices of food commodities and make them unreachable to the poor. Just think of what an amount of food is wasted while eating. Just think of how much amount is spent on military weapons even in the starving countries. If the world comes to a common agreement, is it not easy to control the prices of food commodities that can reach the starving people? If people who waste food think of people dying of hunger, will they not come forward to share the leftovers with the deserving people? If there is a will there is definitely a way to end this hunger deaths.

Mother Teresa’s example

Mother Teresa, the well-known Mother of Charities, used to collect all the leftovers during her flights. Feeding the hungry was her primary mission. She saw the face of dying Jesus Christ in every starving human being.

The World Food Day is a call to end the global hunger. It is just a reminder that if the world does not come forward to realize and be aware of the hunger crisis, it will bring the world to an end. Subramanya Bharathi, the patriotic national poet of India, said, “If a single human being is dying of hunger, the whole world deserves the punishment.”

No one should have to go hungry, together perhaps we can all come up with ways to solve this problem.

Wow!! You are so right about this!! Although a person can be fat and still starving for protein and vegetables which I consider to be a luxury! I am trying to grow vegetables indoors in the winter because my outside garden was put in late and the frost got many of my tomatoes. However, we have very little money to heat our house in the winter to keep my indoor vegetables warm and we never heat the whole house. I digress! At any rate, emotional eaters usually get high and fat on starches! It still is a sin though!! I think I will fast a few days to let it sink in better! Thank you so much!! Fasting does help!! I needed to get this message because I am a very sinful emotional eater who is starving for high priced vegetables!!
