Cause of and Prevention of Cold Sores

Cold Sores are embarrassing and unsightly, and like a zit they often occur at the most inopportune time like before a party, social outing or family gathering. But what causes cold sores? And is there anything we can do to prevent them? Or cover them up?

If your feeling embarrassed know that you are not the only one who suffers from cold sores, approximately 60% of the population has experienced a cold sore at some time throughout their lives. And on average cold sores occur two to three times per year.

Causes of Cold Sores

Cold sores also know as fever blisters are caused by a virus called Herpes Simplex 1 (distinct from the STD or Herpes Simplex 2) that is contagious but not dangerous to your health. The virus remains in a dormant state until our immune systems are in a weakened state such as having a cold or suffering from exhaustion in which case the virus appears as a blister on the lip accompanied by a tingling sensation. Others causes include cold weather, menstruation, sunburn or stress - physical or mental.

Prevention of Cold Sores

Although you cannot cure cold sores you can treat the blisters with non prescription medication such as Abreva which will dramatically reduce the number of days the cold sore is visible. You can try to prevent cold sores by avoiding the triggers, wear lip balm with spf 30 when outside for an extended amount of time, try to get plenty of sleep and relaxation, eat properly, exercise regularly, and avoid tanning beds.

Make-up Tip: Apply Polysporin Cold Sore Healing Patch it speeds up the healing process and allows you to apply make-up as usual.
