Causes of Weight Gain in Females

Though weight gain is associated with genetic reasons and over eating but there are other contributing factors, which we tend to neglect. These factors could be physical health problems or mental health issues.

There is a great possibility that your weight gain is not due to genetic reasons or over eating. It is possible to have some other problem including physical or mental health issues. If you find yourself having any of the following conditions, don’t put yourself on any diet or pills to lose weight. It can further enhance your problem by causing you develop more and more health problems.

1- Hypothyroidism

Hypothyroidism is a condition in which thyroid gland produces low thyroid hormone. One of the symptoms of hypothyroidism is weight gain due to slow metabolic rate. Other symptoms of hypothyroidism may include fatigue, lethargy, swelling of the face or around the eyes, dry skin, poor memory, slow speech, hoarse voice, weakness, intolerance to cold and headache.
Hypothyroidism is 10 times more common in females as compared to males. It usually occurs in early 40s. Some females experience it during menopausal stage. If you are diagnosed with hypothyroidism, your doctor will put you on thyroxin and you will start to lose weight. Still you will have to do some extra effort to come down to your normal weight.

2- Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a common disorder, which causes you to have one or more pauses in breathing or shallow breaths while you sleep. Breathing pauses can last from a few seconds to minutes followed by normal breathing then starts again, sometimes with a loud snort or choking sound. Sleep apnea prevents you from getting sound and restful sleep. Lack of sleep leaves you feeling stressed out and irritable and not getting enough sleep can cause slow metabolic rate resultantly putting on some extra weight.
Usually sleep apnea remains undiagnosed. So if you think you have sleep apnea, you must consult your doctor immediately.

3- Menopause and Weight Gain

Mostly in females increase in weight begins during pre menopause stage due to increased FSH level in the blood. These hormonal changes can trigger hunger, depression, poor sleep and slowing of metabolism. At this stage you need to consult your gynecologist. You might get hormonal treatment or antidepressants to control hot flashes and other symptoms. It would be ideal to avoid both the hormonal treatment and use of antidepressants. Try to treat your symptoms with natural methods of healing.

4- Water Retention

Water retention is a common problem in women during premenstrual symptoms (PMS). It can cause puffiness and swelling. If puffiness is not related to the menstrual cycle then you better consult your doctor as soon as possible to make sure that there is no heart or kidney failure, both of which can cause puffiness or swelling.

5- Fibromyalgia

If you have pain, stiffness, and tenderness of the muscles and/or joints, you might be suffering from a chronic condition known as Fibromyalgia. This condition is also characterized by restless sleep, feeling tired, fatigue, anxiety, depression, and disturbances in bowel function. Fibromyalgia affects predominantly women between the ages of 35 and 55. It also causes hormonal imbalances, affecting levels of cortisol, thyroid, serotonin and insulin, as well as the production of growth hormones. This means your metabolism can slow down and you can put on weight.

6- Vitamin D Deficiency

The symptoms of vitamin D deficiency can vary from individual to individual, depending on presence of any complications, such as bone fracture, the severity of vitamin D deficiency, and other factors. Symptoms of vitamin D deficiency may include bone pain, stooped posture, muscle cramps, weakness, numbness, and a loss of height. Though there is no much scientific evidence of weight gain due to vitamin D deficiency. There are only a few researches indicating a positive correlation between vitamin D deficiency and weight gain.
Usually, patients will tend to lose some weight when they start getting treatment for vitamin D deficiency.

7- Stress

Stress is a normal physiological response to pressure from the outside world. Common stress reactions include tension, irritability, and inability to concentrate. Long term stress can cause physical health problems known as psychosomatic disorders.
In stressful situations we tend to eat more and as a result we gain weight. So learn to relax.

8- Prescribed Drugs

One of the side effects of prescribed drugs is putting on some extra weight. These drugs may include Antidepressants, Antipsychotic, Anti seizure medications, Diabetes medications, High blood pressure medications and Heartburn medications.

Lose Weight Naturally

It is strongly recommended not to put yourself on any diet or pills to lose weight if you have any of the above mentioned health problems. You better try natural methods and to do so you will have to self motivated, responsible and consistent.

1- Flaxseed oil:

It is considered to be good to lose weight as it brings hormonal balance.

2- Practice yoga

• Practice yoga daily for 30 minutes
• Yoga helps you bring hormonal balance
• It makes you feel relaxed
• You will sleep well
• Your metabolic rate will become normal

3- Change your eating habits:

• Eat after every two hours; it will increase your metabolic rate
• Add fruits and vegetables in your diet
• Eat as much as you can but chew slowly
• Drink at least 8 glasses of water a day
• Drink water after an hour of your meal

does ir-regularity in menstural cycle cause weight gain or some sort of puffness? and how can it be solved?

In this case one needs to get TFT done first. If TFT is within the normal range then practice yoga on regular basis.
