Choosing an Acne Treatment during Pregnancy

The causes of teenage acne and a pregnancy-induced relapse are different, but the same: it’s the perfect storm of hormones and their effects on normal skin function.

Never the less, there you have it: pimples.

If you are one of these women so blessed with baby and acne on board, there is much you can do. First off, break out the puberty skin care manual once again and get really strict with your acne fighting routine.

Always wash your face before going to bed

This is a given, but washing periodically during the day can help too. True, washing off all your make-up during the lunch hour and reapplying doesn’t sound like much fun, but if it gets you ahead on the battle in your T zones, then it is worth it. Another culprit that can add to the woes of acne during pregnancy is old make-up or make-up applicators. If you put your blush, concealer or favorite make-up brushes under a microscope you would not like what you see.

Your make-up is colonized by a thriving and ever increasing population of bacteria. With every application of your perfect foundation you are handing a forced relocation notice to the bacteria families happily residing in your foundation bottle. These transplants make the best of their new digs on your cheeks, chin and forehead and cause you to break out.

The only way to keep bacteria populations in your make-up in check is to toss it and get a new, uninfested replacement regularly. Most women do not use enough make-up to use the entire package before the microorganism colonies undergo their population explosions. If your pregnancy skin is showing signs of being acne prone, toss your make-up and replace your brushes. Sponges and cotton balls should have a strict one use policy!

Next, Watch The Diet

I know you are probably already stressing over the healthy diet and nutritional basics needed for baby’s spinal column, healthy eyes and everything else but eating well also increases the health quotient for your skin. If you can choose to get the protein baby needs from a fried chicken leg or a broiled one, give your skin a break and get the broiled option.

Other acne prone foods to avoid are: too much soda pop, deep fried and oily foods like chips or French fries, donuts and foods that are highly processed. Keep in mind bacteria that causes your face to break out will travel to your pillow case in the night. Changing your pillow case often will help protect your skin from return passengers.

Lastly, always use moisturizer on your face. This might seem counter intuitive, but it will help. If your body thinks the skin on your face is too dry, it will kick up the oil production to fix this issue. Oil glands set on over drive will not help your zit situation.

Use a light moisturizer with SPF for daytime, and use a heavier cream at night. If these do it yourself acne treatments during pregnancy aren’t enough then you may need to pull out the big guns. There are many topical, over the counter acne fighting products.

Most of these are safe to use as acne treatment during pregnancy. To be certain you are making not only a safe choice, but also an effective one, ask your OB before you head off to the cosmetics aisle.

Acne Treatment During Pregnancy

Your skin is unique, and will react differently than the next woman’s to any given product. This makes it a good idea to buy a smaller size to try, before plopping down the big bucks for a huge vat of some cream that won’t work for you. Once you find an acne treatment that works for you during pregnancy you should be all set!

Just sit back and enjoy the glow.
