Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a disorder that commonly begins in childhood. Some people will carry this disorder into adulthood. Treatment is possible for reducing the symptoms. These children will have difficulty concentrating and finishing their work.

ADHD is a mental disorder

Most of us would have seen children having Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) but would not have recognized for what it was. Reason for this is those children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder are like all normal children in all ways except in one way. That is in keeping their attention on the job they are doing. This mental disorder can progress or sustain through the life-growing period and manifest even when the child is fully grown up.

Recognizing the symptoms

Predominant feature of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Attention Deficit Disorder is impulsivity, inattentiveness and hyperactivity. Inability to pay attention and restlessness that is inbuilt in the mental makeup of the child makes them poor students with frequent mood swings. Adults may have slight variations of symptoms ranging from impatience to forgetfulness. Here is the list of symptoms shown by children who exhibit hyperactivity.
a) Will not complete their homework and school assignments
b) Easily show boredom with every task they start
c) Will not pay attention when you speak to them
d) Can not concentrate enough to organize or think their way through in a task
e) Daydreaming, confusion and inability to coordinate things and events happening around them
f) Forget things and ignore details
Another section of the children will show hyperactivity instead of inattentiveness. The symptoms will be as follows:
1) Cannot sit still when listening to stories, eating or during class hours
2) Keep squirming around
3) Always moving
4) Talk without a break
5) Cannot do quiet type of work
The last section of children will have another kind of disorder of the brain. They show impulsive reactions for any activity.
i) Cannot wait for things to happen
ii) Interrupt others when they are talking
iii) Make inappropriate comments

Research into this disorder

Brain imaging has shown how people with delayed development in the brain, the region most affected are those involved with planning, paying attention and thinking. Cortex or the outermost layer of the brain will show distinct delay in maturing. The portion of the brain that acts as a connection between the two lobes has an unusual pattern.

Predominant types of ADHD

The classification for children with ADHD is as follows.
a) Hyperactive-Impulsive
b) Inattentive
c) Combination of both the above
When the number of symptoms exceeds six in the category, then they group that kind of ADHD under that class. Group for children showing symptoms of inattentiveness will be the second class. Children showing hyperactivity come under the first class. Then there are those who exhibit both kinds of symptoms and they will come under the last class.

Causes for ADHD

One does not have any clear-cut reason for this disorder. Scientists think that it may be something to do with genes. Like all other diseases, it should depend on a variety of factors like brain injuries, social environment, environmental factors, nutrition and hygiene. Research showed that the genes that caused thinness in the brain became thicker when the passage of time. The symptoms of ADHD also disappeared.

Treating this ailment

For the past several decades, treatment for ADHD and ADD relied on psycho-stimulants. Stimulants for children include Concerta, Metadate CD and Metadate ER, and Adderall and Adderall XR. Researchers tried to establish a relationship between pairs of such disorders like autism—schizophrenia, ADHD—bipolar disorder and major depression—bipolar disorder. One can relieve many of the symptoms though one cannot really cure this completely. After treatment, people who had ADHD can achieve a completely normal and successful social life.
