Do you ever get creatively blocked? Maybe the answer is right in front of you, and you are too busy being blocked to notice it?

Creative Road Block

I am meant to be writing a podcast today. As I stare out of the window, pace around, get another cup of tea and wonder about whether to clean the windows I am struck by the fact that I have absolutely no idea what to write about. It feels unusual to be in a creative dry zone, to feel blocked and have no creative juices flowing at all.

At first I notice myself feeling panic at the thought that I will never write again.

I feel stranded , dry and out of step with what I had set out to achieve. I remember Julia Cameron saying that you have to write through the rubbish to get to the good stuff. So I sit with pen and paper and write lots and lots of rubbish for a couple of hours. I feel anxious about how much rubbish I have to say, and I wonder if there is a limit to the amount of time it takes to get to the good stuff!

When this doesn't work I remember reading something Osho says about jolting yourself out of the known and into a new experience. So I go into the garden and spin round and round and round until I fall over feeling giddy and a bit sick. I do this a few times, hoping it will bring me some sort of insight. It doesn't really help, in the end I had to lie down quite a lot to get over the feeling of being sick.

After one of the spinning moments I must have fallen asleep, and I wake up when the sun moves behind a tree and my soft green grass spot becomes shadowy and cold. I have no idea how long I napped for. I wake up feeling summer lazy, like I have been on a little holiday, my skin a little red from being in the sun.

With this lightness of heart, and relaxedness the block suddenly lifts. I know that I should write about being blocked, and accepting the situation for what it was, and not wishing it to be any other way.

I see the irony of spending a day trying to induce a state that was there all along, I had just not seen it. I had been so busy assuming that I knew what I had to write that I did not notice the gift of the lesson the universe was giving me.

Then I understood the reason for the block. I understood that even when things happen that I don't like and don't want, they are still right for me. I have to work with things as they are in that moment. The more energy I spend trying to get things different the more energy I waste.

What is the message, relax into the moment, accept it as it is, and then be truly alive and open to the messages from your soul.

In the end I did write the podcast. Guess what it was???
