Cures and Old Wives Tales! Bogus, Baloney, and Bull, or is it?

In this world of mass produced products, in particular foodstuffs, we have to be careful of the things we digest and the impact they can have on our lives. Many of the diseases we acquire during our lives are speculated to have come about because of the how we have lived our lives and we can cure them by changing how we live.

Curious Facts!

"It is a scientific fact that your body will not absorb cholesterol if you take it from someone else's plate"

It is interesting these little snippets you find when travelling this great world of ours, and not to stop there here is another one:

"There are no calories in a broken biscuit" (or cookie for our American friends)

There are many sayings just like this that can be discovered and I would be willing to bet that you have heard a few yourself.

Old Wives Tales

Old wives tales are fascinating some are entirely believable, like the idea that carrots are good for your eye sight, they may be but has that idea been tested?

Is beer good for your hair?
    Do figs loosen your bowels?
Does a spoonful of molasses keep cancer at bay?
    Is milk full of calcium?
Does an apple each day keep the dentist away?

These are all statements that may have a modicum of truth in them, but they may also be only true to the same extent that the curative properties alleged by drugs that people take daily, yet people will tend to believe their doctors because they have invested years in attaining professional degrees yet it could also be said that doctors ignore their Hippocratic oath by limiting themselves to prescribing drugs peddled by major drug corporations yet the curative properties of these may be as suspicious as any natural cures or even old wives tales that we hear everyday.

Yet half the world would prefer to listen to the old ways than western medicine, and the truth is it seems the side effects could be worse than the cure with some drugs, something to wonder about when you see American TV commercials, one may cure your snoring but has the worst side effect of all, it could result in death, well pardon me while I live with snoring for the rest of my life, at least herbal remedies don't seem to have side effects like that, yet the drug companies will claim that they do not work at all, simply denying the benefits of natural cures. The major problem with the drug industry is that they are driven by profit to a greater extent than they are in finding a cure to any specific ailment and for them the important factor is getting the drug to market before it is proven to be effective and they state that "side effects cannot be avoided" yet at the point when a product is sent to market they have terminated all research and development into their product. It is also true that when you investigate holistic medicine there are cures that have vary few side effects, they may however require more effort than simply popping a few pills every day, but we should stop looking for the easy cure because it does NOT exist and according to some views the ailments we develop are related to the foods we eat and the lifestyle we live, yet at the same time a brother and sister or husband and wife may each have identical habits yet one person contracts a disease while the other does not.

No Easy Answers

The truth is there are no easy answers available and in truth and people will look back from the future and wonder what all the fuss was about but at the same time they will call the current generation barbarians because of our lack of knowledge of how the human body works, including the whole of the modern medical profession.

There seems to be one undeniable truth, being that drug companies rule the medical profession and they are driven more by profit rather than a need to cure disease, yet here is another undeniable truth cures are as likely to be found in nature as they are in drugs and there is even a belief that if you remove your shoes and stand barefoot on muddy soil (even if it is covered by three foot of snow) then the Earth itself has the ability to cure you - a concept called grounding, stand barefoot on the grass for 30 minutes and you will feel remarkably refreshed. If you search the Internet for either cures or natural cures to any disease you will find a plethora of information available some of which is nothing more than a placebo while others hold many of the answers you need, some are expensive while others are free but just because something is free doesn't mean that it has no value, there is much to be said for eating the correct things as what we put into our bodies has much to do with our health in the long term.

The Need to Research

On the whole people would be well advised to research any so-called cure related to any condition you may have and find out all the available options, we have a fantastic research tool that is available to the modern world, the Internet, it is incorrect to say that doctors are not needed, but a little research can find both the problem and the cure or a range of possible cures but you may have to change many of your lifetime habits. Steve Kinsman is right in pointing out that even with cancer there are better alternatives to chemotherapy drugs and radiation.

Largely we have it within ourselves to cure what ails us, but we tend to think of the disease rather than how well we can be, I count myself fortunate not to have suffered any major ailments, but then I always think myself as fit, I rarely suffer from anything that lasts more than a few days, even as I get older, and part of my daily routine is telling myself that I am fit and healthy and letting that thought run through my body.

Should we trust doctors? This is an intriguing question because they have a desire to cure, but tend only to think of cures in relation to drugs when they should be looking at how to change lifestyles and eating habits before adding chemicals into the body but doctors have been trained to diagnose and if you are suffering from something that requires surgery then certainly you need their skills but most conditions do not need that, and most sensible people know for example not to visit their doctors when suffering a common cold, because it will pass in a few days and most doctors know that most cold medicines are designed just to treat certain symptoms, such as the sore throat, not the cold itself.

Avoid Suffering

One other thing to note is that we live in a world of mass produced food and much of what is sold in our supermarkets is laden with cholesterol, fat and sugar and other ingredients that contributes to bad health, again most food companies or superstores think more about profit than health yet they are seen as leaders, as professionals, as those that should know yet in reality all that matters is profit. Again though it is us, everyday people that need to take the lead in looking after our own health and that ultimately is the key but all too many people are misinformed about what is healthy and what is not. Take for example John, who is in his 60s and believes steak and chips to be the healthiest food you can eat he refuses vegetables because they are "rabbit food" much to the disgust of his daughter who likes the occasional salad. John has had cancer and is proud that he is a survivor yet people should be prouder never having suffered any disease at all.

Doctors will not tell you about "alternative" ways to heal your body, they will tell you about all kinds of drugs. Of course, they get paid to encourage people to take pills.
Interesting to note too doctors will not tell you how to stay healthy in the first place, but will treat you after you get sick.

Well, doctors just tell us about pills, and not ways to improve our diets and way of life. Yet, they do tell us to avoid excess of everything- be it excess of sitting in one position, excess of salt, sugar etc. Its up to us to look after ourselves.

I just read that there are ways to cure cancer but the medical profession will not allow them to be brought into the public's eyes..platinum metal ruthenium was discussed in the Scientific American Journal of May 1995 and in the Platinum Metals Review regular articles are featured concerning the use of platinum, iridium and rutenium in the treatment of cancers which are caused through the abnormal and uncontrolled division of body cells..if you want more message me...

Well I have a relative who has lived with bone cancer for over 30 years and still alive.
Another person used green vegetable and got the cancer kept at bay, the minute he stopped this, it came back engulfed him and ultimately killed him painfully. There was another who was the founder of Lady Irwin College she also went through similar effects like the second person and passed away.
Then came this teenage girl with blood cancer and she went raw vegetables and no processed foods and she is alive till date. She was my junior in school during the 90's.

Well Nature has all the cures we need but what it doesn't need is the pain and suffering of life's modernity that destroys her tranquil surroundings.
I am a naturalist and hate going to the doctor. Last went to see my GP in April 2012 and in September this year for a regular check up getting an all clear.
You are what you make your environment to be and above all what you eat....
Take care, I live naturally and some of the old wives tales are true although many of them are just things that are blind laced with superstitious beliefs. You are what you co-create, its as simple as that...

Hi Peter, May be you are aware of Ayurveda. Even though so far Ayurveda has not been able to find sure shot ways of combating big killers like AIDS, or cancer, its holistic approach of strengthening our immune system and focus on eating, breathing and other habits is something which has benefitted many in their lives. I for instance take Ayurvedic syrup for cough and it is in no way less effective than allopathic formulations.

Then, we have the concept of cold foods, hot foods (or Taseer). In winters, fods with Hot nature(taseer) like Spinach, Walnuts, Ginger are recommended, whreas foods with cold nature(Taseer) are recommnded for summers- WaterMelon, Lemon, Curd etc. I am not against allopathy yet many people are now turning towards Ayurveda, Naturopathy and Homeopathy for cures, since many allopathic treatments have serious side-effects- many a times on our digestive systems, or immunity itself.

What each body needs can be different. There are no easy answers. But listening to our bodies surely is a positive step.
As usual, a well-written article.

I once heard that during the second world war , the Germans were informed that the British pilots ate lots of carrots so as to see in the dark ....this was to hide the fact that we were developing new radar which they wanted to be kept secret ...Carrots do have many good properties in them which I am sure help in many ways though ..
I also believe that we triunne creatures , and therefore need to take care of all aspects of our life , body , soul and spirit ...
Happy New Year Peter .

Hi Peter, I consider this one of the best articles that I have ever read. I have believed for a long time that the human body can cure itself of any ailment if we understood properly how it works. I have also been saying for years that doctors are concentrating on curing disease when they should instead be looking for ways to prevent it. I also agree with Steve Kinsman whom you quoted here. Please continue to bring this to the attention of as many people as possible. I am 74 years old but I have grandchildren. I have posted this article on facebook, tweeted it, stumbled it and intend to share with other friends by any means available. Again I say thank you. Blessings.

Thought provoking and useful Peter, thanks. Our body is the best pharmacy we have control of and its curative abilities should not be disturbed through interference from chemical additives. Many take care of their appearance but not so much what they put in their mouths. So many are said to be panaceas but there are no conclusive proof - like Swedish Bitters and ginseng. Modern medicine is getting so expensive that only few have access to drugs and hence forced to depend on self medication and what is passed down. Sadly, everything is becoming business including medical profession. There were doctors I knew who could diagnose through look and touch but machines dictate the terms; the costlier, the better! siva
