Scientists have long known that illness and depression are linked. This study focused on depression and heart disease.

Depression on the rise

Most Montrealers can attest to either having had bouts of depression or know someone who has. However, it appears that this mental illness issue is more common than Montrealers think. In 2020, which is not far off, the estimate is that depression is going to become the second most common disorder with only heart disease ranking higher.

The link between depression and heart disease

Montrealers are now finding out that there is a connection between depression and heart disease. There have been several studies pointing in that direction. Depression is linked to death from a second heart attack, and death which occurs within in the first six months after a first heart attack. Depression is also a risk factor for getting a coronary heart disease in the first place.

Teen suicide

These studies revealed:

Depression and attempted suicides was implicated in certain people who also had cardiovascular disease or ischemic heart disease, premature death from heart disease and more.

Unfortunately there have not been many studies on the significance between heart disease and depression in young people. The rise of depression within the youth population of Montreal is on the rise.

Teen suicide is on the rise all over North America and Montrealers have had their share of kids who committed suicide over bullying and or depression. Incidentally bullying does lead to depression. Are the teens who are depressed at risk for suicide or if not are they at risk for heart disease, either now at the tender age they are or in the future?

More studies need to be done.
