It is important to keep track of your weight from time to time to determine any medical problem which might arise in the future. But how do you find out if your weight is healthy or not? Answer is Body Mass Index (BMI). Read on to find out how.

It is Important to Maintain Healthy Weight

Do you think your weight is healthy, how do you find out if it is not? Well, there is a method called Body Mass Index (BMI), which can be used to check if your weight falls in a healthy or unhealthy range.
It is important to note that BMI is not absolutely accurate all the time, but it provides an estimate good enough to be used in clinical practice.

Body Mass Index (BMI)

BMI is a method of measuring body fat taking weight and height into account. This method was developed by a Belgian polymath named Adolphe Quetelet back in 1830. Considerable amount of time was devoted to come up with Body Mass Index as it is based on experimental observation.
BMI can be calculated by many different ways. The most common method of calculation is by dividing the body mass of individual by the square of his or her height. SI units are used when carrying out such calculations: body mass is measured in kilograms and height is measured in meters.
Your body weight is considered normal or optimal if BMI number falls within 18-25. If the index falls below 18, then you are under-weight and should take appropriate actions to bring your body weight in the optimal range. If your body weight is above 25, then you are considered over-weight. Appropriate actions must be carried out to bring your body weight in the optimal weight range.
BMI may pin-point several underlying health related causes. BMI in the under-weight range indicates malnutrition and if in the over-weight range, it indicates increased chances of diabetes.

Is BMI a Good Indicator?

It is important to know that BMI is a good method to determine the body fat, but it is mostly good for population studies. BMI alone can’t be used to diagnose an individual of specific medical problem. It is however a good indicator providing physician an area of interest to look into.
There are many controversies that surround the use of BMI clinically to diagnose medical problems. Because of such controversies, many variations of this method of calculating BMI have been developed. One such variation is called BMI prime.
BMI prime compares the actual BMI ratio to the ratio of upper limit BMI. According to some experts, BMI prime is a better method for clinical diagnosis.

What do BMI numbers actually mean?

According to the World Health Organization, BMI number in the range of 18.5-25 is considered optimal, and individuals should strive to remain within this range to stay healthy. BMI in between 16-18.5 is considered underweight, 15-16 is severely underweight and less than 15 is considered very severely underweight.

It is very important to maintain good health by making sure that we are providing our body all the vitamins and minerals it needs. Often times, it is a good idea to asses your diet and change it accordingly to meet all the nutritional requirements.
