Depression seems to be associated with increasing the risk of diabetes directly. Depression could attack anyone, but the risk is greater with people who have diabetes.

Association Between Depression and Diabetes

People think of these two serious health concerns as two isolated situations. But there are thousands of clinical evidences that prove Depression and Diabetes are linked. Most interesting thing about association between depression and diabetes is they affect both ways. That means as well as diabetes could cause depression, depression also causes diabetes.
What is diabetes?
More than 10% of senior population in United States (23.5 million) has diabetes. Diabetes is a metabolism disorder. Metabolism means the way our body transform digested food to energy. Most of the digested food is broken into glucose. After the digestion glucose is absorbed to the blood flow. After that absorbed glucose is either transformed into energy or deposited in our body tissues. But always a certain concentration of glucose remains with the blood flow. This process is mainly controlled by two important hormones, Insulin and Glucagon, act vital roles in regulating glucose level. These hormones are secreted by Langerhans in the pancreas. It is evident that hormones like adrenaline, noradrenaline, thyrotoxicosis, also affect on carbohydrate regulation.
What is depression?
Depression is a very common psychiatric disorder. It is considered as a serious medical condition which interferes with your daily lifestyle and routing. It has become a major issue for the quality of life. Depression has many signs and symptoms.
*persistent sadness
*feeling of negativity
*feeling powerless to change your future
*insomnia or oversleeping
*attempts on death or suicide
How are diabetes and depression linked?
Diabetes is considered as a physical disorder and depression is a mental issue. How are these two linked? Many scientific researches have been carried out concerning clinical evidences. Most of the diabetes patients had depression and most of the patients suffered depression also suffered diabetes. Then scientists found hormonal disorders among both types of patients. The link between mental activities and physical activities are hormones. Hormones stimulate many mental and physical activities. Sometimes these activities start chain of new activities and in the end of the whole process two totally different activities associate with each other.
How to control diabetes and depression?
Since it is proven there is a link between diabetes and depression it is important to treat both disorders at same time. Having healthy diet, exercises, adequate weight, are recommended to lower the risk of diabetes. At present most popular treatments for depression includes
*selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI)
*serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI)
*cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
