Diet is a dirty word. Dieting is a part-time way to lose weight, not keep it off. There is a smarter and better way to do this.

Lifestyle change

Dieting will help you lose weight quickly or shed a few pounds. However it is not effective. The term diet is temporary. If you are ready to lose weight you must be prepared to change your life. Changing your life towards a healthy path is much more successful.

Motivation

You have to be ready for a change. Motivation to change yourself is very important. Putting notes around your house that inspire you to live healthy is a great way to start. Keep a journal or blog of what you are doing, your plans and goals. Tell your friends that you are making a change. Telling people about your goal will make it more real and obtainable to you.

Eating habits

Take a look at everything you eat by writing it down each day. When you look at the food you are eating you will have a better snapshot of what you need to change. You should be eating several small meals a day. The food you eat should be colorful and high in fiber. Each day should include five servings of fruits and vegetables. Change your habits bit by bit. Soon you will be eating healthy and craving healthy foods instead of the junk food of before.

Exercise

Starting an exercise program is extremely important to becoming a healthier you. This should be part of your every day schedule. Lifting weights and building muscle will help you burn more calories. The more muscle a person has, the more calories are burned. Incorporate cardio into your daily routine, aim for 5-6 days a week. Mix up your routine every 10-12 weeks so your body doesn’t become complacent to your exercises.

Become active

Losing weight and being healthy means you becoming an active person. When you get home from work instead of sitting in front of the television go for a walk. Take your children outside and play a game of Frisbee. Being active is very important to losing weight and keeping it off. Look at your everyday life at small changes you can make. It can be as simple as taking the stairs or parking further away from the office.

Get your family on board

It is challenging to change your lifestyle if you don’t have the support of your family. If your family isn’t healthy, reaching for the junk food is easier. Lead by example and ask your family to follow. It will help having their positive life changes around you, and lead you to success.

Alot of the reasons behind people not "living healthily" and people "dieting" is because of convenience. I think that when people realize that once you make the hard first steps towards becoming healthy and change their lifestyle a little bit they will realize how much more energy they have and how much easier their lives become. Thanks for the great article.

Thanks Mason for the comments. I must say I don't believe in 'quick tips' for a flat belly. You cannot target a part of your body to lose weight.
