How fit do you really need to be to complete Tough Mudder?

I'm an average guy...

I'm 5'10", 13 stone and thought I'm not eating McDonalds every day I am not exercising either. I had a shoulder injury in 2011 that meant I couldn't do much for 9 months and generally haven't got much better since. As part of a work thing I completed a 10K in 2013, my only act of serious fitness for the year. I completed it in 53 minutes and spent the week limping and aching.

So, as part of a motivation to change, I signed up to complete Tough Mudder in August 2014. I have again signed up with work mates and one other, who is in considerably worse shape than I (which is saying something). I don't properly 'train'...So, how 'Tough' do you actually have to be?

Well, I will write an update once completed... however there are a couple of things I am fairly certain will get me through this and to consider if you are in a similar position considering the event.

1) Tough Mudder is as much about team working as physical fitness. We have all committed to helping the others get through it, all will stick together, all will ensure we complete... as a group.
2) Though I'm not as fit as I was, I can pace ok. Pacing is going to be the key... keeping a steady rate throughout will hopefully avoid the burnout.
3) I'm getting used to sweating - this has always been the thing for me. I don't 'practice' or train intensively, but 4 weeks before I start getting used to the feeling of sweating and continuing. This can be a 2-3 mile run, but there is something about the feeling of sweating and blowing that can stop you, even if you're feeling ok.

So, if you are an average guy like me thinking about he dreaded Tough Mudder I'd say do it. Get a few of you and get yourselves around there... it'll be worth it!
