There is no doubt that major drug shortages will effect the populace in many ways from prescribed medication to performing surgeries.

Drug shortages may affect surgeries

Written in 2012

The shortage of drugs caused by the slowdown of production in Montreal is affecting all of Canada.

This has gotten Montreal anesthesiologists and anesthesiologists all over the country worried that it will affect surgery and some patients who need elective surgery would have to wait. This also includes the sedatives given to calm a patient down before surgery.

Drug shortage Sandoz

"I've been getting a lot of emails from colleagues right across the country," said Dr. Rick Chisholm, president of the Canadian Anesthesiologists' Society.

"What I've heard from the rest of the country is (hospitals are) sort of taking stock of what inventory they have, what their typical usage is, trying to figure out how long their stocks are going to last, looking up what supplies Sandoz has told them they're going to be able to ship."

Sandoz is at the hearth of the problem, they stopped production of over 100 medications when the FDA in the USA raised some concerns after they visited the Boucherville plant just outside of Montreal. The plant had a fire in 2012 that affected the medications as well.

Anesthesiologists may have to revert back to some of the older drugs in the interim. Meanwhile elective surgery may have to be cut.

Government says it will fix the problem

Chisholm said there are some drugs he needs that only the Montreal Sandoz plant offers.

"Everything I use is a sterile IV injectable. Everything I use is a generic IV injectable -- and 85 per cent of the drugs in my cart are from Sandoz," he said.

"So if I don't have it, I've got to go look for something else."

Prime Minister Harper ( he is now the former prime minister) stated that the Canadian government is aware of the problem and is looking into solutions.
