The WHO has pointed out that exposure to metals can be greatly increased by personal habits such as bruxism and gum-chewing. It has sited this issue in its report which reveals a 5.3 fold increase in mercury levels after chewing, eating, or tooth brushing. ( WHO (2003) Elemental Mercury and Inorganic Mercury Compounds: Human Health Aspects, p. 11)
