First aid for hot water burns

Any contact with a hot surface or a source of heat will cause a burn injury on the skin. However, hot water burns, commonly known as scalds, are deeper and healing is slower compared to burns suffered due to contact with dry heat. Scalding is one of the most common cases of second-degree burns.

Do this for first aid

1. First, remove the person from the source of heat or the source of heat from the person, whichever is appropriate, to avoid further injuries.
2. Second, remove any clothing especially if the burn is at least second degree. However, be careful not to remove it if it is already stuck to the body.
3. Third, cool the burns injury by running cold water over the scald. This should be done for about twenty minutes and over-cooling should be avoided, as it is likely to cause numbness. In case you cannot get water, use any other cold liquid.
4. Fourth, if blisters form, never pop them as they may complicate the situation. Popping the blisters will form a wound, which can easily be exposed to germs causing an infection.
5. Last, in case of a severe or a third degree burn, it is advisable to loosely wrap the injured area and seek medical attention.

What to avoid

1. Adhesive tape – never wrap an adhesive tape on the burn because this is likely to cause more damage to the tissues
2. Ointments, creams, toothpaste, lotions or butter – Applying any of these on a burn injury should be avoided as this may increase the chances of an infection and worsen the burn injury
3. Breaking blisters – This will expose the injury to germs, which will increase the chances of getting an infection, thereby complicating the injury
4. Removing stuck clothing – Any clothing that is stuck to the burn injury should not be removed as this will cause further damage on the skin.
5. Cooling children for long – Unlike adults, children are more likely to suffer from hypothermia if they are subjected to a cold bath for a long time. Therefore, if the casualty is a young child or a baby, cooling should be done for only about five minutes.
6. Using ice to cool the injury – Cooling a burn injury with ice will cause more damage to the skin around the wound.
7. Touching the injured part – As much as possible, avoid touching the injured area to avoid accidental popping of the scalds and further complications.
