Flat feet can worsen varicose veins, and can together cause knee and back pain.

Importance of a Properly Aligned Feet

Our feet, no less than the pelvis, do a marvelous job of bearing the weight of our bodies. The bones in each foot, 26 in number, are held together by 33 joints and more than 100 muscles, tendons and ligaments to form arches that are flexible enough to distribute the body weight across our feet and legs and adapt to various surfaces and stresses. Myriad sensory nerve endings in the feet send signals to the brain to tell the body how to react and stabilize.

Causes for Flat Feet

Owing to ageing and constant strain(excessive weight and the use of high heeled foot wear and prolonged standing), the muscles in the feet get weakened and the foot arches collapse, a condition called flat feet.

Flat feet are more common amongst women. An interesting fact is that pregnancy is one of the factors that lead to varicose veins. It is easy to see why women with multiple pregnancies have flat feet.

Though it is normal to have flat feet during childhood, supportive arches -- the inner part of the foot that is slightly raised off the ground -- develop as we grow. Wearing ill-fitting shoes can hamper this development and lead to flat feet. Walking barefoot whenever possible can help with the development of strong supporting arches.

Arthritic conditions and degenerative bone disease such as rheumatoid arthritis may also cause flat feet.

Troubles Caused by Flat Feet

People with flat feet or fallen arches either have no arch, or it is very low. When these people walk or jog for long period, they experience severe foot and ankle pain. Their feet may roll over to the inner side when they are standing or walking, and the feet may point outwards as a result. The resulting misalignment causes Tendinitis, the swelling and inflammation of the tendon, mainly affecting the Achilles tendon, and is the reason for ankle pain and foot pain.

Due to the lack of an arch in the foot, pressure at the base of the great toe may cause the joint to enlarge, causing foot pain. Muscle weakness caused by flat feet may also allow toes to curl into a claw-like position referred to as hammertoe. Those with flat feet may suffer calluses and bunions due to the constant rubbing of the foot against the inside of the shoe.

Walking or exercising with flat feet may cause inflammation of the shin bones, popularly called shin splints. This is caused by flexion and extension of the foot.

Flat feet interferes with blood circulation, causing discomfort and pain in the legs, back and hips, especially when standing for long periods of time. Overtime, bad posture due to poor support on the soles of the feet can cause varicose veins.

What Are Varicose Veins?

Veins are vessels which drain blood from the peripheral parts of the body and channel it back to the heart. Varicose veins are enlarged, deformed, superficial veins in which blood flow is slowed, or even reversed, as compared to the normal venous circulation. Varicose disease results from stretching of the vein walls and malfunction of the valves that normally direct blood back to the heart.

Varicose veins may cause restless legs, a common complaint with many elderly women. Varicose veins in the lower extremities can cause pelvic congestion, which can cause pelvic pain.

i spent the weekend in a workshop on the Fascia system or connective tissue...it is so important to not wear shoes and let the feet absorb the earth's energy
