Celery has many health benefits some well known and some not as well known.

Health Benefits of Celery

Celery is a long and slender vegetable that usually grows up to 15 inches. The celery is usually eaten cold as people eat it by itself or add it to salads, it has a salty taste so it is usually added to sweeter fruits to give a nice taste.

Celery is well known as a good food for lowering blood pressure as it has a chemical that lowers stress hormones in your body and has a compound called "phtalides" that helps to relax your muscles around arteries which helps blood flow around the body more easily. It also contains natural salt (sodium) rather than table salt (iodised sodium) which is harmful to those with high blood pressure.

This vegetable also helps with lowering your total negative cholesterol (the artery-clogging cholesterol).

Celery is also rich in vitamin C which makes your immune system stronger and gives you relief from the cold. Celery contains a lot of fibre, this helps with constipation and helps to relax the nerves that have been overworked by laxatives.

Celery also contains a high amount of calcium which helps your bones and teeth but it also helps calm the nerves in your body making you more relaxed.

The following has not yet been proved but is widely believed.

It is believed that celery is a negative calorie food, this means that when you eat it you burn more calories than you consume. For example: if you eat a stick of celery (about 7 calories) and your body burns about 10 calories (through eating and digesting it).

It is also believed that celery helps with weight loss as it lowers your cravings for sweets and snacks.
