Tobacco smoking is injurious to health. This article provides information on various health risks of smoking.

Introduction:

Tobacco smoking or smoking is the practise of burning tobacco and inhaling its smoke. People all over the world have been smoking from thousands of years. Cigarettes, beedis, cigars, hookah, electronic cigarettes, kretek, pipes and vaporizers are used to inhale tobacco smoke. Unfortunate souls in this world called "passive smokers" are forced to inhale tobacco smoke puffed out generously by their so called friends and relatives. Generally people start smoking during early adulthood. Some start because they think it is cool. Some are influenced by their friends and family members. Most of them become addicted.

Health risks of smoking tobacco:

Smoking is injurious to health. World Health Organization (WHO) has estimated that more than 100 million people have died due to tobacco smoking in the 20th century. Research studies indicate that smoking increases the risk of cancers of the pancreas, stomach, esophagus, lungs, larynx, bladder and mouth. In fact 87 percent of lung cancer deaths are caused by tobacco smoking.

Smokers are also more likely to suffer heart attack. The risk of heart attack increases three times in men and six times in women (assuming that they are smoking one pack a day). Smoking harms blood vessels. It increases bad LDL cholesterol and decreases good HDL cholesterol. It increases heart rate and blood pressure. People who smoke regularly are more likely to suffer stroke. Women who smoke during pregnancy are more likely to suffer pregnancy related complications.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is more prevalant among smokers. Smokers are more likely to suffer from emphysema, a lung disease which causes shortness of breath. Tobacco smoking is found to increase the risk of Crohn's disease. It increases insulin resistance. Smoking increases fibrinogen, a protein known to form clots. It also reduces fertility.

Smoke from tobacco is loaded with free radicals which are worst enemies of the human body. Smoking is known to produce coughs. It causes peptic ulcer. It is found to cause cataract. Second hand smoking increases the risk of chronic sinusitis. Smoking causes harm to nearly every organ of this wonderful human body.

Conclusion:

Fortunately authorities all over the world are realizing the dangers of tobacco smoking. Some governments have taken positive steps like banning of smoking in public areas. But individuals should understand the health risks of smoking and should give up this useless habit. People who have quit have saved their valuable money, looks and health. Smoking is definitely one of the worst things people can do to their bodies.
