How the Internet has become the centre of bad science and dangerous diet advice

Daily Dose

I am constantly assaulted by Terrorist Sites.

You know the kind, always shrieking about how sour sop kills cancer cells.. or how swimming pools cause fatal diseases.

These sites don't issue casual warnings or present research with the 'engage brain' option. They shout with all the committment of a Fundie, that this product causes death and that product, (which you can order by clicking the arrow) will Save Your Life!

If you haven't been exposed to these terror tactics before, it is not surprising you are clicking those arrows and sending money. For these sites are not Health Sites, they aren't real sites, they are Health Terrorism in its most uncontrolled form.

"Health" Sites which seem so legitimate, chock full of health claims and warnings. Thousands of articles, each surrounded by ads, interrupted by pop-ups, which are written by a stay at home mom (or dad) supported by the kind of research that would get you kicked out of the primary school science fair.

Forget Reality!

Years ago, as I mentioned in another article, we used to make our own coconut oil.

We used to use coconut oil as the only oil to cook, the only oil on our skin, the only oil on our hair, the only oil on our babies.

This went on for centuries.

Then, somehow, those folks you've seen on 'Mad Men' (or their clones) were able to jam it into our heads that coconut oil is bad for us and we should use that lubricant called 'Vegetable Oil' (manufactured in some factory somewhere) which is 'healthy'.

Now when you're over 80 and you've always used coconut oil, and your mother, who is 99 has always used it, you continue to use it.

However, if you're in your 20s, ever so modern, believing in 'Science' (term used in it's High School definition not as Obeah) you switch to the touted vegetable oil, eat all the modern foods and drinks advertised on Television.

Modern people, who at the age of 40, are seriously overweight, have diabetes and a pile of other diseases, and die before 50.

The 80 year old and her mother attend the funeral of Miss Louise, that fat woman who used to teach at the All Age School. While having a smoke in the cemetery, 22 year old Shereka tells them how bad cigarettes are for their health, as she shoves another piece of KFC in her mouth.

Although this may seem rather graphic, nothing is more ridiculous than someone under 30 telling people over 70 what is and what is not 'good' for them.

Health Porn

One of the ignored aspects of the free for all called the 'Internet' i is the Health Porn that abounds.

No organisation is slapping down these terror sites which fool people not merely into thinking that various items are unhealthy, but convince them to consume things which may have absolutely no nutritional value and are unhealthy.

Take Margerine; it was created as a lubricant for machines. Didn't work so well. To cut losses it was fed to animals. To make profit it was fed to people.

The good folks of Madison Avenue, exceptionally well paid, have convinced generations that butter is bad for them with not one single substantiated fact.

Health Porn/Terrorist sites spew more toxic waste than a broken sewer main, for at least you know what is flowing in the street and can avoid it. These sites, pretending to be valid, (well designed, carefully edited with photographs and charts and ads ever so discretely painting the page) fool more people than Bernie Madoff.

And continue to fool them.

Abounding Rubbish

I was going to being this section with the statement; 'If you've ever visited..." but realise that the more proper word is 'When'. This is because you can not escape these sites.

They have ads everywhere, send unsolicited email, (as they are good Google/ Facebook customers who pay for email addresses).

Once they get your email you can be assured of daily blasts of terror.

If you ever sign any of their petitions, if you click on any of their sister sites, you double, triple your exposure.

Every day you will receive another warning that something is 'dangerous' and should be replaced by...(whatever the advertiser is selling).

These sites are genius. They will always have some story of a rescued dog or animal about to go extinct, a do-gooder organisation, a recipe or two, to make it seem that it is a 'Good Housekeeping' approved venue.

There will be dozens of references, with enticing headlines which are links to other sites which will soon be emailing pages of garbage wrapped as important information you need to know.

What to do?

Find old people, really old people, those in their 90s who are living active lives. Find out what they eat, how they cook, how they live.

I'm not saying you run and take up smoking, or take a wash out every third Sunday, and I'm not saying you only eat from your back yard garden or spend triple on so-called 'organic' stuff which may be rewrapped veges bought at the supermarket.

What I am saying is that when you attend the funeral of Teacher Louise who died at 46 from some diet related disease and see Miss Agnes and her daughter Beatrice, (who are 99 and 80 respectively) stealing a smoke in the cemetery, use them as your diet guru, not the dearly departed.

I am so glad you wrote this article! The bastardization of what is "healthy" and what is not is out of control and devoid of logic, reasoning, and fact. I have a particular grievance against "organic," which is the biggest hoax on the planet.

That is exactly right! "Organic"...just a word which catches the fools.

Today we are being bombarded with several articles about food, and we no longer know which is good or bad for us. Thanks for sharing.

I come from a country where up until the 80s we didn't know of diabetes, high blood pressure, and few people were fat...I mean really fat.

Today people are virtually round, every other person has high blood pressure, the rest have any of a number of diet related diseases...Why?
1. We moved from the 'evil' coconut oil to the 'healthy' vegetable oil.
2. We moved from a diet of various starches and little meat to a diet full of processed meat
3. Fast food joints are on every corner and are virtually shoving their garbage down our throats.
4. Every other person is addicted to soda

Today, living to be 90 is unusual where in the past unless you were killed you lived to 90 and above.

Exactly right, GV...we don't know what is good/bad according to these sites. But if we ignore the sites and deal with reality we are better off.

Well done, every week we hear about some new super food and rush out to get it, but two weeks later a new super food is mentioned and we drop the first one and rush out to get the latest one.

I can see someone advertising soursop and importing them into other countries like Kiwi and Mango and stuff like that...it's a fruit it is good for you...but some of these 'enhancers', like powdered whatever, supplements of whatever...nahhh.

Great article, Kaylar. I get plenty of email about life-saving "natural" food products, dietary supplements, low-cost life insurance (probably necessary if the life-saving products fail), the latest electronic gadgets, discounts on 5-star hotels in places I have never heard of and, of course, the generous offers to manage my investments and pension fund (which I don't have).

One email I get from time to time (including its variations) is one that informs me his/her uncle has died and left a fortune that can only be transferred out of the country through a foreign bank account (mine?). I will get 10% of the total or something like that for receiving this vast fortune, etc., etc. I think we all get that one from time to time.

Surprisingly, emails about women's cosmetic products and uplift bras seem to be arriving less frequently. I must be blacklisted as a bad customer and don't deserve to be informed about these essential products.

Mike; I stumbled into Care2Com or whatever they call themselves which sends me crap every day. I'm on their mailing list...and they've shared my address with a twin agency.

I still get the Nigerian scammers...not as regularly.. but most of the stuff goes directly into the junk file without my having to see it

Hi, kaylar. I had to turn off my junk mail folder 'cos Wikinut email was suddenly being sent to it for some strange reason. I thought Wikinut had abandoned me until I checked the junk folder.

Thanks for the good post. Because of money people are willing to cook up all sort of lies. It is alright if they don't run down others. But as you can see, poor coconut farmers are already badly hurt.

The selling of junk and the terrifying of buying junk go hand in hand. I very rarely read anything about 'health', since most of what is written is garbage. Total garbage.

What really turned me off was this 'Dr. Atkins' who died ... telling people how and what to eat...and dying of food realated diseases.
