Just somethings I have learned over the years for fighting a cold.

Home Remedies - The Cold

When I was thinking about writing this, I thought about things I learned from my mom growing up, plus a few things I have picked up from friends over the years. The following are all things I have tried, or personally know the person that tried them. All of them are proved to help in one way or the other. So I hope this helps in advance, no one likes feeling under the weather.

There is the ever popular hot shower, it will help clear your sinuses and break the mucus up in your chest.

Hot pepper tea will warm up your chest and help with breaking up mucus, it will also sooth your throat

Take a onion and put sugar on it, allow it to sit in a bowl in the refrigerator for 2 hours. Drain the juices from the bowl and drink them. This will ease coughing and sooth your throat.

Make your own salt water rinse (Mix 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon baking soda in 8 ounces of warm water). Fill a bulb syringe with this mixture to irrigate your nose. Salt-water rinsing helps break nasal congestion while also removing virus particles and bacteria from your nose.

Drink plenty of fluids to help break up your congestion. Drinking water or juice will prevent dehydration and keep your throat moist. Include fluids such as water, sports drinks, herbal teas, fruit drinks, or ginger ale.

Blow your nose often, but do it the proper way. It's important to blow your nose when you have a cold rather than sniffling mucus back into your body.

Gargle with warm salt water. Gargling can moisten a sore or scratchy throat and bring some relief.

Put a small amount of mentholated salve under your nose to help open your sinuses and help restore the irritated skin around your nose.

Take a damp washcloth and heat it for 30 seconds in a microwave. Apply washcloth around your congested sinuses.

Look into natural remedies like zinc, echinacea, and vitamin C. People looking for natural and cold remedies often turn to supplements to help boost there immune system.

Well I hope this helps you get through the winter and the cold season in general. These are just some of the main things I have learned when it comes to battling a pesky cold. I would like to hear other remedies as well, so feel free to share.
